Consult with Nurse Educator regarding staff educational needs and staff development plans. 12. Communicate changes and quality improvements with staff by conducting daily huddles, departmental meetings, and electronic communication , etc. 13. Work collaboratively with Operations Manager and Nurse Manager. Communicate problems that may arise in a timely manner. Address personnel problems, i.e.: problems with Time and Attendance. 14. Communicate problems that may arise with Nurse Manager and Operations Manager. 15. Attend and participates in assigned Management Meetings. 16. Work as a Team member across organization. Receives, logs-in, and assigns computer accession numbers to specimens (bloods, urines and body fluids) from nursing floors, outpatient drawing sites and off-site locations. a. Receives specimens into the LIS by scanning barcodes or manual entry. b. Verifies upon receipt, that all samples are labeled according to laboratory policy. c. Correctly labels tubes with bar coded labels, double checking the name on the barcode label with the name on the specimen and affixing the label in such a way that the original name on the specimen can still be seen. d. Looks up all un-barcoded specimens inthe LIS. Prints appropriate labels if ordered or contacts appropriate floor if no orders have been entered. e. Accurately and completely enters all tests into the LIS from downtime and outpatient requisitions. f. Documents in the LIS any specimen or test cancellations and contacts the appropriate physician or location. 2. Properly prepares specimens according to specific Reference Laboratory requirements, using all available reference books or calling the specific lab for requirements. a. Centrifuges and separates specimens to be sent out observing any special test requirements. b. Transmits a temperature-specific site batch report to the appropriate reference lab and enters the number and type of the specimen(s) sent. c. Enters the name of the test and order code into the LIS whenever ordering a miscellaneous test send out (MTSO) d. Submits cpt code(s) and cost for MTSO tests to the Specimen Processing Supervisor for billing. 3. Maintains work area - cleans bench, restocks supplies, notifies Supervisor of low stock. a. Performs daily cleaning of work area. b. Maintains appropriate supplies for work being performed. c. Assures that supplies are sufficient for ongoing testing. Notifies Supervisor where not. 4. Job Description Summary Performs phlebotomy functions and non–technical duties in areas including SSH&EC Laboratory, outpatient and off-site services. Job Description 1. Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick) according to established procedure of South Shore Hospital. a. Performs venipuncture using correct technique and with minimal discomfort to the patient. b. Performs fingerstick procedures with correct technique and when unable to obtain specimen by venipuncture. c. Performs heelstick on babies with correct technique. 2. Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes. a. Identifies patient by checking name and Hospital Medical Record number on patient armband. b. Labels all specimen tubes following established procedure: Date and time of draw and Phlebotomist initials when not using Bar Code Labels generated by Automated Patient Identification system. c. When using Automated Patient Identification system, scan the barcode on your employee badge and enter your Meditech password into the handheld. d. Select patient on handheld then scan patients' armband to bring up that patients' orders. Highlight tests to be drawn, draw patient, select method that you used (venipuncture, heelstick, etc.) hold handheld over label printer to print labels. (Only labels for that patient will print) e. All label printing and application to tubes is to be done at the bedside. 3. Determines priority of STAT draws. Insures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing. a.
