Muchas gracias por compartir y por estar con las maestras, los maestros, los profesores, las familias que realmente estáis cambiando, revolucionando, transformando y mejorando la educación. Mi nombre es Jesús, soy Jesús Guillén, astrofísico, me encanta la Ciencia, soy profesor, he sido profesor de prácticamente todas las etapas educativas y, en los últimos años, cambié los misterios del Universo por los del cerebro. Me embarqué en la investigación de las aplicaciones educativas de la neurociencia, de la ciencia cognitiva en general. Y ese es el reto, analizar evidencias empíricas que provienen de las evidencias de la ciencia cognitiva y sus aplicaciones educativas en el aula o en cualquier otro contexto educativo. Y me gustaría mucho compartir una historia con todas vosotras y vosotros. Tenéis que imaginar, visualizar esta historia, va a durar muy poquito, es una historia real, pero os propongo que la imaginéis con los ojos cerrados. Hace unos años, un investigador, Álvaro Pascual Leone, que trabaja en Harvard, es un neurocientífico muy prestigioso, estaba realizando unos experimentos fantásticos, pedía a los participantes que aprendieran a tocar una pieza musical, el piano. ¿Imaginas cómo tocaban el piano? ¿El contacto de los dedos? Luego analizó sus cerebros, ¿y qué observó Pascual Leone? Que la región motora de sus cerebros asociada al movimiento de los dedos en pocos días, como consecuencia de la práctica, crecía. Luego pidió a otros participantes que, en lugar de tocar la pieza musical, imaginaran, visualizaran que tocaban el piano y también analizó sus cerebros. Pascual Leone observó que la región motora asociada al movimiento de los dedos de esos participantes que no tocaban el piano, sino que imaginaban que lo tocaban, también crecía en pocos días. Podéis abrir los ojos. ¿No es maravilloso? Así es nuestro cerebro. Tremendamente plástico, cambiando continuamente, reorganizándose a nivel funcional y estructural en muy poquito tiempo. Esto tiene muchas implicaciones educativas, ¿esperamos nosotros la mejora de todos nuestros estudiantes? Todos podemos mejorar, podemos aprender durante toda la vida, compartimos otra historia. Se ha visto que los bebés, en el primer semestre, son capaces de diferenciar fonemas, sonidos de cualquier lengua, del chino mandarín, del español, del inglés, a través de un aprendizaje estadístico e inferencial de su cerebro. Sin embargo, en el segundo semestre, ¿qué han observado los investigadores? Patricia Kuhl, por ejemplo, que se especializan en los sonidos a los que están expuestos; en torno al octavo o décimo mes, ya solo diferencian los sonidos a los que están expuestos en casa, se han convertido en oyentes culturales. Cogió bebés monolingües estadounidenses que solo habían escuchado el inglés americano y les dio unas clases de chino mandarín. Diez, doce sesiones. Había tres condiciones experimentales diferentes, en una, la profesora en un entorno lúdico con otros bebés, pronunciaba las palabras; en otra condición, los bebés veían un vídeo de la profesora y en la tercera condición experimental, los bebés escuchaban la grabación sonora de esa profesora. ¿Qué vieron las investigadoras? Que sí, los bebés, en ese segundo semestre podían aprender a diferenciar los fonemas, los sonidos del chino mandarín, pero solo en una condición experimental, en vivo y en directo, con la profesora. Cerebros plásticos, cerebros sociales, ceberos únicos, ¿tenemos en cuenta estas características en educación? Bueno, ahí dejamos la pregunta. Y ahora si os parece, comenzamos un debate, analizando evidencias empíricas, aplicaciones prácticas educativas de esto que llamamos “neuroeducación”. Juan Alfonso . Hola, buenas tardes, soy Juan Alfonso, soy profesor de Biología. Ahora se oye hablar mucho de neuroeducación, pero también se oye que es un mito, que es una tendencia, que es una moda, a mí me gustaría saber si realmente existe la neuroeducación y en qué consiste. Jesús C. Guillén . La primera pregunta que nos tendríamos que plantear es qué entendemos por neuroeducación, pues bien, la neuroeducación es un campo de estudio, un enfoque integrador, transdisciplinar en el que confluyen los conocimientos suministrados por la neurociencia, muy importante. Debido al desarrollo de las tecnologías de visualización cerebral, actualmente, en vivo y en directo, podemos analizar el funcionamiento del cerebro de personas calculando, creando, cooperando, jugando, emocionándose, leyendo. Esto es importante, pero se han de integrar estos conocimientos con los que suministran, aportan, la psicología, la pedagogía. ¿El objetivo cuál es? Mejorar los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje basándonos en los conocimientos del funcionamiento del cerebro, integrando todos estos conocimientos. Elegimos cuatro cuestiones que entendemos que son importantes. La primera, vinculada al desarrollo del cerebro, se ha visto que el defecto perjudica, no que el exceso beneficia en la primera infancia, tanto de cero a tres como en la adolescencia, se ha comprobado que se da un proceso de reorganización a nivel cerebral brutal, lo que nos ha demostrado la neurociencia es que la carencia social, afectiva, como en el caso de los bebés en orfanatos rumanos en la época de Ceauçescu, eso les perjudica para su desarrollo a nivel cerebral. Ahora bien, cuando eran adoptados por familias inglesas, antes siempre mejor, esas carencias, esos déficits se iban solucionando. Se ha comprobado también, los estudios recientes de (Kimberly) Noble y compañía que los estatus socio económicos desfavorecidos perjudican el correcto desarrollo de la corteza cerebral. No se sabe exactamente por qué, si debido al estrés, la carencia de estímulos, la mala alimentación, la falta de afecto, pero perjudica. Pero, por otro lado, el exceso, más no es mejor, el estrés que se le provoca por debido a la sobre estimulación a los bebés puede ser muy perjudicial, especialmente en regiones del cerebro como la corteza prefrontal, sede de lo más racional. Importante esta etapa de cero a tres. Y en la adolescencia se ha visto que se da una reorganización espectacular del cerebro, seguramente la razón por la que observamos en los adolescentes estas conductas impulsivas, esta necesidad de recompensa, se deba a ese desfase temporal en la maduración de la corteza prefrontal, sede de lo más racional que hasta los veintitantos años no acaba de madurar. Respecto a la maduración del sistema límbico, creemos que la mejor estrategia para afrontar la adolescencia es información. Información sobre embarazos no deseados, sobre drogas, ¡pues no! “La autorregulación se trabaja con buenos programas de Inteligencia Emocional” Los neurocientíficos nos están sugiriendo que los adolescentes no necesitan información, no son conscientes de las decisiones que toman. Necesitan autorregulación. Y la autorregulación se va trabajando con el paso del tiempo, con buenos programas de educación emocional. Los neurocientíficos nos sugieren, por ejemplo, que, en el aprendizaje inicial de la lectura, qué importante es el desarrollo de la ruta fonológica. Esa correspondencia entre los sonidos, los fonemas y las letras, los grafemas, por encima del método global que se había utilizado. Qué interesante. O en el aprendizaje inicial de las matemáticas. Años atrás se creía que nacíamos como si fuera un cerebro en blanco, no, no es una tabla rasa, realmente se ha comprobado que los bebés al poco de nacer disponen de una especie de sentido numérico innato, son capaces de diferenciar conjuntos de objetos pequeños, dos respecto a tres, sin necesidad de contar. Son capaces de identificar operaciones aritméticas básicas, en un escenario les colocas un objeto, bajas el telón, ellos ven como colocas otro, levantas el telón y en lugar de aparecer dos objetos la operación aritmética lógica, uno más uno, dos, aparece uno, y se sorprenden ante el suceso imposible. La operación aritmética imposible uno más uno, uno. Qué importante se ha visto optimizar estas intuiciones numéricas que ya tienen los bebés; qué importante hacer conciliar el lenguaje simbólico de la aritmética con las cantidades, se ha visto que esto es súper importante, no hay que esperar hasta los siete años como decía Piaget para introducir estos conceptos numéricos. Desarrollo del cerebro, lengua, matemáticas, pero también nos están sugiriendo estas investigaciones aspectos muy relevantes relacionados con las emociones, no podemos separar lo emocional de lo cognitivo, son imprescindibles se están viendo las emociones en la toma de decisiones. O respecto a la atención, los neurocientíficos nos están demostrando que no es un constructo único, que existen diferentes redes atencionales, una red de alerta, una red de orientación, pero una especialmente importante: la atención ejecutiva, que nos permite estar concentrados en las tareas, inhibiendo estímulos irrelevantes. ¿Y qué podemos hacer en la práctica para mejorar esta atención ejecutiva tan importante para el estudio, para el aprendizaje? Pues nos lo están demostrando los investigadores, hay software lúdico específico que trabaja estas cuestiones, pero también se está viendo la importancia del mindfulness, la importancia del ejercicio, parones de cuatro minutos, para que los estudiantes puedan moverse, son suficientes para mejorar esta concentración durante las tareas posteriores. La primera pregunta que nos tendríamos que plantear es: “¿Para qué educamos? ¿Qué es lo importante en la Educación? ¿Qué es lo que queremos que realmente aprendan?” Desde el enfoque de la neuroeducación, para nosotros es imprescindible un aprendizaje desde, en y para la vida. ¿Y cuál es el factor crítico que nos sugieren las investigaciones? Tiene nombre. Se llama “funciones ejecutivas del cerebro”. Son las funciones cognitivas complejas que nos diferencias de otras especies, son las que nos permiten planificar, tomar decisiones adecuadas. Imprescindibles para un buen desempeño de la vida cotidiana, imprescindibles para el rendimiento académico del alumnado. Los neurocientíficos hablan de tres en concreto. ¿Queréis conocerlas? Las podemos descubrir a través de una dinámica, de un juego, sí, ¿os ponéis de pie, por favor? Antes hablábamos de la importancia de la visualización. Visualizad, imaginad que ahora estáis en una clase de primaria, ¿sí? Estáis en un programa, se llama el programa Tools of the Mind, y este programa está trabajando estas funciones ejecutivas. Vosotros, los estudiantes; yo, la maestra. ¿Visualizáis la maestra? Más o menos. Muy bien, os voy a dar cuatro instrucciones, cada una de las instrucciones lleva asociada un gesto, un movimiento; las recordamos. Cuando os diga círculo, vais a hacer un corazoncito, cuando diga cuadrado, os vais a convertir en conexiones neuronales, vibrando, cuando digamos triángulo, piensa en serotonina, bienestar y dices: “Me siento bien”, y cuando digamos rombo, vais a hacer el trenecito, el trenecito se mueve, no nos podemos mover mucho, pero un poquito sí, ¿no? Chiqui-chiqui, pruébalo, el trenecito, chiqui-chiqui. Muy bien. ¡Cuadrado! No me miréis que no os guío, ¿eh? ¡Círculo! ¿Rombo? ¡Triángulo! Círculo, muy bien, cambiamos las instrucciones, no os quejéis, eso es lo que hacen los adultos. Los chavales de primaria no se quejan, cuando digamos, recordamos la información, cuando digamos círculo, vais a hacer el trenecito, no me miréis que no os voy a guiar, cuando digamos cuadrado, vas a decir: “Me siento bien”, cuando digamos triángulo, os vais a convertir en conexiones neuronales y cuando digamos rombo, vais a hacer el corazoncito. ¡Cuadrado! ¡Rombo! ¡Triángulo! ¡Círculo! ¡Cuadrado! ¡Rombo! Muy bien, un aplauso. Nos podemos sentar. Os preguntaréis: “Y esa profesora, ¿qué está haciendo, se ha vuelto loca?” Pues no, no se ha vuelto loca. Fijaos en esa dinámica con sus estudiantes de primaria, hay que conocer el contexto, estaba trabajando las tres funciones ejecutivas que se consideran imprescindibles, básicas, consideradas por los neurocientíficos, fijaos, os costaba inhibir los impulsos, control inhibitorio, teníais que recordar la información, memoria de trabajo y cuando hemos cambiado las instrucciones os teníais que adaptar a la nueva situación, flexibilidad cognitiva. Esas son las tres básicas que nos permiten luego resolver problemas, aplicar el espíritu crítico, etcétera. Y que también se trabajan muy bien mediante el teatro, el teatro permite trabajar muy bien las funciones ejecutivas del cerebro. ¿Por qué? Porque los estudiantes tienen que recordar el papel, tienen que esperar su turno; cuando recuerdan el papel, memoria de trabajo; al esperar su turno, control inhibitorio; ¿que se equivoca el compañero?, se tiene que adaptar a la nueva situación, flexibilidad cognitiva. Y encima en un contexto social Los investigadores han visto que las funciones ejecutivas son imprescindibles para el éxito en la vida, si yo no sé controlarme, tendré dificultades en un atasco de tráfico, pero también lo pasaré mal al intentar resolver un conflicto laboral o un conflicto personal, o me costará estar centrado intentando resolver un problema matemático. Lo mejor de todo es que se ha visto que se pueden entrenar; este software lúdico que comentábamos antes, estos programas computarizados, tareas de discriminación visual que permiten trabajarlas. Pero ella cree después de todos estos años, que el mejor enfoque es ir más allá de lo cognitivo. Sabemos lo que perjudica a las funciones ejecutivas o a la sede de las mismas, la corteza prefrontal. Hola, Jesús, mi nombre es Isabel, soy maestra de Educación Especial, y siempre nos hablan de lo bueno que es practicar deporte, pero ¿puede el ejercicio físico mejorar el rendimiento académico? Gracias. Jesús C. Guillén . Los beneficios de la actividad física, del ejercicio, del deporte, parece que no se limitan al tema cardiovascular, al sistema inmunológico, sino que también hay beneficios cognitivos. Los neurocientíficos, Gómez Pinilla, Pereira, etcétera, han visto que, al realizar ejercicio, se librean unas proteínas, unas moléculas, ese BDNF, un factor neurotrófico que está directamente vinculado a procesos neuronales básicos para el aprendizaje. Plasticidad sináptica, mejores conexiones neuronales; neurogénesis, más neuronas, como si al ordenador le pusiéramos más memoria, y en el hipocampo; mayor vascularización cerebral, más sangre, más glucosa para mejorar el funcionamiento de las neuronas y además se libera toda una serie de neurotransmisores que se ha visto que intervienen en los procesos atencionales. Un entrenamiento anual incrementa el volumen del hipocampo y eso mismo se ha visto con niños y adolescentes. Aquellos que tienen mejor capacidad cardiorrespiratoria tienen un volumen del hipocampo mayor; y esto, ¿incide a nivel académico? Pues parece que sí, lo hemos comentado antes, para mejorar esta atención ejecutiva que es tan importante la concentración durante las tareas, los parones activos para que los niños o adolescentes puedan moverse les va genial. No solo eso. John Ratey, el famoso neurocientífico, analizó las escuelas Naperville en Estados Unidos; ¿y qué vio? Que les iba genial comenzar la jornada escolar con veinte minutos de actividad aeróbica o juegos activos que los mismos estudiantes elegían. Incidía esto a nivel físico, pero también a nivel académico. Podemos hablar de una incidencia, bueno, indirecta, una correlación, pero benditas correlaciones en algunos casos. Y también los grandes neurocientíficos, Arthur Kramer, Charles Hillman están viendo que parece que el ejercicio beneficia también las funciones ejecutivas del cerebro, sobre todo cuando hay un esfuerzo cognitivo asociado. Los programas de Taekwondo, donde confluyen los beneficios del ejercicio físico con la necesidad de estar concentrado en determinados movimientos, les va genial a los estudiantes para mejorar su autorregulación, muy bien para aquellos que tienen TDH, por ejemplo. Un simple paseo por un entorno natural de quince minutos les va muy bien también a este tipo de estudiantes. Es como si se recargaran esos depósitos de neurotransmisores que intervienen en los procesos atencionales: serotonina, dopamina, etcétera. La importancia del movimiento. Fijaos. Aquí la educación física se considera secundaria, ¿y en qué momento de la jornada escolar se hace deporte? Al final. Las investigaciones sugieren que debería colocarse al inicio para optimizar los procesos atencionales. Y ya hay algún estudio específico donde también demuestra que colocar la clase de educación física al inicio de la jornada escolar va a mejorar la concentración durante las tareas posteriores en la mañana. La conexión cuerpo y cerebro es mucho más importante de lo que se creía, va mucho más allá incluso del deporte; los deportes de equipo son también un entrenamiento ejecutivo fantástico, en una situación de incertidumbre, los chavales tienen que tomar decisiones y, además, moviéndose. Pero van más allá las investigaciones. Se está viendo el poder, los beneficios de los gestos en el aprendizaje; imaginad una profesora de física que está explicando un concepto vinculado al momento angular, giro, ¿y qué está haciendo? Hacer girar una rueda de una bicicleta, algo que incluso puede ser más beneficioso si lo hace el propio alumno. Se activan regiones sensoriales y motrices vinculadas a las que intervienen en lo cognitivo, en el aprendizaje. El descubridor de las neuronas espejo, Giacomo Rizzolatti, siempre dice: “El cerebro que actúa es un cerebro que comprende”. Sí. Se ha visto en el concepto de las matemáticas que va muy bien utilizar gestos adecuados: Uno más dos, me paro, miembro de la izquierda, igual, me paro, miembro de la derecha, tres. Esto es beneficioso, lo que no es beneficioso es: uno más dos, tres. Y no solo eso, hay ejemplos fantásticos; por ejemplo, en el aprendizaje de la lectura, se ha visto que los pequeños aprenden a leer mejor no solo cuando ven las palabras o cuando las escuchan, sino cuando hacen el gesto de las letras. Se activa una región de la corteza motora, ya sea en chino mandarín, en francés, en cualquier idioma vinculado al desarrollo de esta ruta fonológica. Y es que es así como aprende el cerebro. Un cerebro multisensorial. Y esto contradice uno de los “neuromitos” más arraigados en Educación, que es el de los estilos de aprendizaje. Creemos que los estudiantes aprenden mejor cuando suministramos la información en su estilo de aprendizaje favorito y las evidencias empíricas sugieren lo contrario. Alicia . Hola, Jesús, soy Alicia, soy educadora social y también madre y estamos hablando de los beneficios que tiene el ejercicio físico, pero ¿se puede entrenar el cerebro? “La asignatura de educación física debería ir al comienzo del día para reforzar la concentración” Jesús C. Guillén . En cuanto al entrenamiento cognitivo, bueno, hay cierta controversia en la comunidad científica. Se cree que determinadas habilidades pueden entrenarse, mejorarse, la memoria de trabajo; otra cuestión que no queda clara si como consecuencia de esta mejora esto puede trasladarse, transferirse a otras situaciones de aprendizaje, por ejemplo, en el aula. Es lo que vamos a investigar también en el próximo curso. Lo que se está viendo, por ejemplo, se ha visto en personas de la tercera edad, que lo beneficioso para el cerebro es el reto, el esfuerzo cognitivo. Aprender cosas que requieran esfuerzo, que sean novedosas, si no se te da bien bailar, aprender un nuevo baile; si se te da mal el tema lingüístico, aprender una nueva lengua. El hacer crucigramas, en el momento en el que automatizas el proceso, ya deja de haber esfuerzo cognitivo y no es tan beneficioso como en el caso de estos aprendizajes que requieren un mayor esfuerzo. Pero claro esto lo llevamos también al tema educativo. ¡Qué importante es el esfuerzo cognitivo! Pero qué importante también es la motivación, el reto, la sorpresa; hay una frase fantástica de Francisco Mora, a mí me encanta, seguro que a vosotras también: “Solo podemos aprender aquello que se ama”. Pues bien, hay investigación que corrobora eso, los estudios de Gruber, por ejemplo. ¿Qué han demostrado? A mayor grado de curiosidad suscitada, se activan más esas regiones del cerebro que forman parte del llamado “sistema de recompensa cerebral”, vinculadas al neurotransmisor dopamina, motivación intrínseca, me siento bien. Pero esa mayor activación de estas regiones hace que fluya mejor la información con esas otras regiones que intervienen en el aprendizaje, como en el caso, ya aparecido, del hipocampo o la corteza prefrontal. Lo hemos sabido siempre: estamos programados desde el nacimiento para aprender a través de lo que nos motiva. Claro, la motivación tiene varios elementos, a nosotros nos encanta hacer la analogía motivación-reacción de combustión, para que se inicie una reacción de combustión, ¿qué hace falta? Chispa, muy bien. Motivación inicial. ¿Y luego? Para que fluya la reacción de combustión hace falta combustible, oxígeno, motivación de logro. Difícilmente, si no vinculamos el aprendizaje a situaciones reales, si no tenemos en cuenta los intereses del alumnado, sus conocimientos previos, si no los hacemos cooperar, difícilmente los vamos a motivar. Asumiendo, por supuesto, que no hay soluciones únicas, pero aquí volvemos al tema superimportante del reto, el reto para el cerebro. Y esto se ha analizado también. Nuestro compañero y amigo el neurocientífico Fabricio Ballarini, el efecto sorpresa. ¿Sorprendemos a nuestros estudiantes? Antes de trabajar, quince minutos o veinte minutos antes de trabajar un contenido curricular, se les sorprende a los estudiantes, se les lleva a un concierto musical, al laboratorio, una prueba sorpresiva. ¿Y qué observan los investigadores? Que, como consecuencia de esta sorpresa, consolidan mejor los aprendizajes. Irene . Hola, yo me llamo Irene, bueno, gracias por tu charla. Yo no me dedico a la enseñanza, yo soy una madre de un niño de once años; lo que quería preguntarte era: ¿Cómo llevamos todo esto de la neuroeducación, que es la primera vez que lo oigo, a nuestras casas y cómo influyen las expectativas que los padres ponemos en nuestros hijos? Jesús C. Guillén . Una mamá me dijo una vez: “La maestra ha dicho de mi hija de cinco años que nunca irá a la universidad”. Menos mal que el cerebro es plástico. Pero recuerdo también un chaval de ocho años que me dijo: “a mí siempre se me dieron mal las matemáticas”. Así. Cuánto daño han hecho y siguen haciendo las etiquetas, lo sabemos. Y esto está vinculado a la plasticidad del cerebro, pero también a una idea muy importante que ha analizado Carol Dweck, de Stanford. Mentalidad de crecimiento. ¿Os suena esta idea? Es tan, tan importante. Lo que vio Carol Dweck, y sus colaboradoras, vieron que había dos perfiles diferenciados de los estudiantes. Había estudiantes que creen que estamos determinados por la genética, el que nace listo, nace listo y el que nace lo contrario, lo contrario. Estas ideas preconcebidas, ¿qué conllevaban? Que ante un reto más complicado, no querían exponerse, querían salvaguardar su ego. Que se expongan, que trabajen los que no son listos, no nosotros. Eran menos perseverantes ante los retos más complicados, tenían mayor tendencia a copiar en los exámenes, a hacer trampas y obtenían peores resultados académicos que aquellos, es una forma de hablar, así les llamaron las investigadoras, con mentalidad de crecimiento. Estos creen que podemos mejorar nuestras capacidades, nuestras habilidades a través del esfuerzo, la dedicación, de escuchar buenos consejos de otras personas. ¿Y por qué se caracterizaban estos estudiantes? Porque ante un reto más complicado, eran más perseverantes, más resilientes, no se venían abajo, creían en el valor del esfuerzo; y no solo eso, las investigadoras vieron que, como consecuencia de estas ideas, obtenían mejores resultados académicos. La primera pregunta que se plantearon es: “¿Qué podemos hacer para optimizar esta mentalidad de crecimiento, tan importante en el aula?” Vieron lo importante que era enseñarles a los estudiantes cómo funciona su cerebro. Les encanta a los estudiantes de todas las etapas educativas saber cómo funciona su cerebro. ¿Sabéis por qué? ¿Por qué lo justifican? ¿Qué tenemos en común todos nosotros? Todos tenemos uno. Muy bien, se les enseñaba a estos estudiantes con muchas dificultades académicas que el cerebro es plástico, que somos capaces de generar nuevas neuronas, que la inteligencia es maleable, que, en definitiva, se pueden responsabilizar de su aprendizaje. Y esto incidía positivamente sobre su motivación, generaba mentalidad de crecimiento. Pero vieron también otras estrategias, por ejemplo, el poder del lenguaje, también en la familia. Vieron que era muy adecuado elogiarles por el esfuerzo, pero no por la capacidad. “Lo has hecho muy bien porque lo has trabajado muy bien, no porque eres muy listo”. Este lenguaje, “eres muy listo”, vieron que se iba generando también en la familia desde que son pequeñitos: “eres muy listo, eres muy listo”, “soy muy listo”, interiorizo que soy muy listo y ante un reto más complicado no me expongo, porque soy listo y… Les perjudica. El poder del lenguaje. El poder de las expectativas. Evidentemente, en la familia, se pueden hacer muchas otras cosas; para nosotros es súper importante que participen las familias también en la Educación, que haya una buena colaboración con la escuela. Pero, qué importantes son los buenos hábitos, el dormir las horas adecuadas; en el caso de la adolescencia, se ha visto que hay un retraso en la liberación de una hormona, melatonina, que les hace tener un ritmo circadiano un poco de búho, retrasado. Tienen necesidad de acostarse más tarde. Las escuelas comienzan a las ocho muchas veces en secundaria, hay investigaciones muy recientes que sugieren que retrasar el inicio de la jornada escolar una hora les va genial a los adolescentes, pero que bueno, desde casa, desde que son pequeñitos, ir creando esos hábitos. Y qué importante también es la nutrición para el cerebro. El cerebro representa aproximadamente un dos por ciento del peso corporal, pero las necesidades energéticas son del veinte hasta del veinticinco por ciento respecto al cuerpo entero. Pero el tema de las etiquetas, muchas veces, estas reuniones de trasvase de información en los centros escolares que se hacen con toda la buena intención para lo que sirve muchas veces es para etiquetar. “Fulanito es TDH” y cuando llega a clase, “TDH, TDH, pum”. Le haces una pregunta, le dejas menos tiempo, capta ese lenguaje no verbal, y eso le perjudica. Las expectativas son muy importantes en el aprendizaje. Carol Dweck dice: “Not yet. No todavía. Podrás, no ahora, pero podrás”. Esto está en consonancia con lo que sabemos sobre el funcionamiento del cerebro. Carmen . Hola, soy Carmen, madre y profesora de adolescentes, me gustaría que nos dijeras o nos explicaras cómo podemos ayudar a nuestros hijos, a nuestros estudiantes a mejorar las técnicas de estudio. Jesús C. Guillén . La ciencia cognitiva ha identificado técnicas de estudio y aprendizaje muy potentes que están muchas veces en contradicción con lo que hacen nuestros hijos, nuestros estudiantes o incluso, con lo que sabemos los adultos o creemos saber los adultos o los profesores. Comentamos algunas de ellas si os parece bien. La primera, lo que se conoce como “práctica espaciada”, y que es una estrategia fantástica para combatir lo que se llama procrastinación, la tendencia a demorar las tareas; mejor que una sesión de estudio de una hora, dos sesiones de estudio de media hora espaciadas en el tiempo. Esto va bien. Los parones correspondientes para, de alguna forma, evitar la fatiga mental. A gran escala, se ha visto que esto tiene una incidencia también, qué importante es el currículum en espiral, aprendemos practicando, pero esto no significa repetir los conceptos una y otra vez, sino analizarlos desde diferentes enfoques. Desde la técnica de estudio en casa, hacer los parones correspondientes, pero hay que dedicarle tiempo, no hay vuelta de hoja, el esfuerzo cognitivo que comentábamos anteriormente. También se ha visto el poder de las buenas preguntas. Pero claro, el tema de las buenas preguntas, ¿qué es una buena pregunta? Imaginaos si os preguntara dos más dos, ¿dos más dos? Cuatro, ¿queréis saber lo que nos dijo una niña pequeñita, de cinco añitos? Dijo: “Bueno, dos más dos, depende. Tenemos dos gatitos hambrientos y dos ratoncitos bien gorditos, al final tendremos dos gatitos bien alimentados”. Depende de nosotros guiar el proceso de aprendizaje, reprimimos el pensamiento de la niña o “genial”, de alguna forma optimizamos el desarrollo del pensamiento creativo. ¿Se os ocurre otra situación en la que también dos más dos sea dos? Pues bien, se ha visto que cuando hacemos el esfuerzo por recordar la información más significativa que se ha analizado, que se ha estudiado, este esfuerzo cognitivo es beneficioso para el aprendizaje; y esto se puede llevar a la práctica a través de pequeños cuestionarios, no estamos hablando de los exámenes como herramientas calificadoras, vamos más allá; en un momento determinado de la sesión de estudio en casa o en el aula, al final de la clase, dedicar unos minutitos con un cuestionario, se pueden utilizar recursos digitales o no, para identificar lo más significativo que se ha estudiado. Este esfuerzo que va a tener que hacer el hijo o el alumno incide de forma positiva sobre su aprendizaje. Práctica del recuerdo, efecto del test a veces se le llama. Y, vinculado al poder de las buenas preguntas, lo que se conoce como “interrogación elaborativa o auto explicación”, el que se hagan preguntas cuando están estudiando o leyendo algo intentando vincular lo que están estudiando con los conocimientos previos que ya tienen. Están con el tema de los planetas, ¿por qué Júpiter tarda más en dar una vuelta alrededor del Sol que Marte? ¿Porque la velocidad de traslación es menor, porque la masa es mayor? Estas reflexiones se ha visto que es muy interesante, optimiza el aprendizaje. Y la auto explicación es algo parecido, a través del diálogo interno o en voz alta, también plantearse preguntas vinculadas a lo que está estudiando o analizando. Esto está directamente relacionado con lo que se llama “meta cognición”, reflexión sobre lo que estamos estudiando y aprendiendo. Y se está viendo que son muy interesantes las estrategias como el portfolio, las rutinas de pensamiento, es decir, seguir determinados patrones de actuación. ¿Qué sé? Escribe: “¿Qué sé?, ¿qué debo saber?, ¿qué he aprendido?” Seguir estas pautas crean hábitos mentales que son muy beneficiosos y fomentan este aprender a aprender o reflexionar sobre lo que estoy estudiando. También hay otra estrategia que se ha visto desde la psicología cognitiva, que es muy interesante, que es lo que se conoce como “práctica intercalada”. Normalmente, en las listas de tareas de problemas o en los libros, ¿qué ocurre? Se agrupan los procedimientos de resolución. Estamos con los polinomios: “Ejercicio uno, polinomios, ejercicio dos, polinomios y cambiamos los números”. Pues se ha visto que es mejor: El primer ejercicio sobre el Teorema de Pitágoras, pero el segundo, no sobre el Teorema de Pitágoras porque si siempre vas a aplicar el mismo procedimiento, no hay que hacer ningún esfuerzo cognitivo, ya sabes lo que tienes que hacer para aplicar. El segundo sí, sobre polinomios; ¿y el tercero? Vinculado a la probabilidad. La educación física, la educación artística y la educación emocional deberían compartir protagonismo con las matemáticas y la lengua El tener que pensar diferentes procedimientos de resolución parece que tiene una incidencia positiva sobre el aprendizaje, asumiendo que cada estudiante, cada hijo es diferente y tiene unas necesidades particulares que, por supuesto, hay que conocer. Daniel . Hola, Jesús, mi nombre es Daniel y soy orientador educativo en colegios e institutos. Hemos pasado de una época en la que la memoria, digamos, tenía un papel fundamental a una época en la que parece que la memoria ha quedado un poco de lado. Entonces, mi pregunta sería: ¿Cuál es el papel de la memoria, del razonamiento? Jesús C. Guillén . ¿Recordáis lo que estabais haciendo el 11-S? ¿Sí? ¿Quién recuerda lo que estaba haciendo el 11-S? Han pasado un montón de años. Muchos. ¿Cómo es posible? Impacto emocional. Vinculamos esto del impacto emocional a lo que habíamos comentado antes: efecto sorpresa, ¿no? Motivación. Pero ¿y qué ocurre en situaciones en las que no hay impacto emocional? Porque fijaos, todos habréis tenido en vuestra época de estudiantes muy buenos profesores, que os explicaron alguna vez en vuestra vida qué es esto de la diferencia de potencial, los doscientos veinte voltios; que levante el brazo quien es capaz de explicarnos qué es la diferencia de potencial. ¿Nadie? Bueno, no pasa nada, ¿podemos vivir sin saber lo que es la diferencia de potencial? ¿Quién hubiera levantado el brazo? Pues, a lo mejor, alguien que estuviera en contacto con el conocimiento, algún ingeniero, pero nosotros no hemos estado en contacto con esos conocimientos. Pero ¿y si el día que te lo explicaron te hubieran llevado a una central hidroeléctrica? Hubieras visto caer cómo se genera la electricidad, cayendo el agua en la presa y te hubieran hecho la analogía: “El movimiento de las partículas del agua es análogo, equivalente al movimiento de los electrones por el conductor, por el cable eléctrico”. A lo mejor te hubiera quedado más información. Pero ni ha habido práctica ni hubo impacto emocional. ¿Y qué es lo que ocurre?, ¿cómo aprendemos entonces en situaciones que no hay impacto emocional? ¿Podemos aprender? Sí, con la práctica adecuada, por supuesto. A nivel neuronal se aplica aquello de “úsalo o piérdelo”, pero ¿de qué estamos hablando cuando mencionamos la memoria? ¿Podemos aprender sin memoria? ¿Qué nos dicen los neurocientíficos, por ejemplo, el premio Nobel Eric Kandel, a través de sus investigaciones? Pues que existen diferentes tipos de memoria. ¿Cómo aprendemos a montar en bicicleta, a escribir o a tocar un instrumento musical? Repitiendo la acción. No hay vuelta de hoja. En ese caso, hablamos de una memoria implícita, un aprendizaje implícito en el que intervienen regiones subcorticales, son conexiones que cuestan realmente consolidar pero que luego son muy rígidas; es un aprendizaje inconsciente, no puedo verbalizar cómo he aprendido a montar en bicicleta, practicando. Pero si esto te lo llevas a otro tipo de aprendizajes, como en el caso de la resolución de problemas matemáticos, pues ¿qué va a pasar? Vas a desmotivar a los estudiantes. No se puede aplicar este procedimiento en esos casos porque ahí interviene otra memoria. La memoria explícita. A corto plazo, corteza prefrontal, memoria online, memoria de trabajo, en el proceso de consolidación, el hipocampo ya ha aparecido y se van transfiriendo a las diferentes partes de la corteza esos recuerdos a través del sueño. Qué importante es el sueño, se está viendo desde la neurociencia, en el proceso de consolidación de los aprendizajes, de lo estudiado en la vigilia. Es otra memoria diferente que requiere procedimientos diferentes, algo más relacional, más asociativo. La importancia de las analogías, de las metáforas, asumiendo que, en muchas ocasiones, pues pueden coincidir los dos tipos de aprendizaje. Aprenderemos a escribir practicando, pero luego tenemos que interiorizar las normas ortográficas, eso es un aprendizaje explícito. Qué importante en cada caso conocer qué tipo de aprendizaje utilizar y luego pues también conocer lo que comentábamos antes, las estrategias, las técnicas de estudio y aprendizaje correspondientes. Guillén . ¿Te sientes bien? Jesús C. Guillén . ¿Y si en lugar de haber escuchado cuestiones positivas hubieras escuchado cuestiones negativas, cosas malas que les han pasado a ellos? Maite . Pues a lo mejor más agitada, ¿no? Jesús C. Guillén . Muy bien. No te sentirías de la misma forma. Jesús C. Guillén . Genial, no estamos hablando de erradicar ninguna emoción, todas son importantes, todas tienen un valor adaptativo, pero, lo sabemos, existe contagio emocional positivo y existe contagio emocional negativo, ¿o no? Nos vamos al laboratorio, una investigación genial, de Erc, bueno, se ha replicado varias veces. Se muestra a los participantes, imágenes que corresponden a contextos emocionales positivos, gente sonriendo, o negativos, gente llorando, sufriendo. Se les pide a los participantes que recuerden una información y luego se analiza sus cerebros. ¿Qué se observa? Ante contextos emocionales positivos, no se activan las mismas áreas que ante contextos emocionales negativos. Ante los negativos, se activa la amígdala, una región del cerebro que interviene en el procesamiento emocional muy activa ante situaciones de miedo, estrés, pero ante contextos emocionales positivos se activa el hipocampo, una región del cerebro, ya hemos comentado, que interviene en procesos de consolidación de las memorias del aprendizaje, y no solo eso, los participantes recuerdan mejor la información. Fantástico. ¿Qué te sugiere? ¿Te sugiere algo esta investigación o similares? ¡Qué importantes son los climas emocionales positivos en el aprendizaje! Pero ¿qué significa, por ejemplo, en el aula un clima emocional positivo? Bueno, pues seguramente estemos pensando en un entorno en el que los estudiantes no tienen miedo a equivocarse, también nos equivocamos nosotros, los adultos; donde participan, cooperan, son protagonistas activos, en donde las expectativas son positivas tanto las del profesorado sobre la capacidad del alumnado, “yo creo que puedes”, como las del estudiante sobre su propia capacidad, “si yo creo que no puedo…”. Lo sabemos. Qué importante. Estos estudios provienen de la neurociencia, pero desde otro ámbito de investigación, los metaanálisis, ¿qué nos dicen? Pues fijaos, los buenos programas de educación emocional, en donde intervienen estudiantes de cualquier etapa educativa, ¿qué nos dicen las investigaciones? Pues que inciden positivamente en toda una serie de competencias emocionales imprescindibles en los tiempos actuales. ¿Qué competencias emocionales trabajan estos programas de educación emocional? ¿Qué competencias trabajarán? Pues las conocemos: resiliencia, autorregulación, conciencia emocional, asertividad, empatía, genial, esto es importante, pero también inciden positivamente sobre el rendimiento académico del alumnado. No podemos separar lo emocional de lo cognitivo como se ha hecho tradicionalmente y como ha demostrado los últimos años el gran neurólogo de origen portugués, António Damásio, imprescindibles las emociones en la toma de decisiones. Has mencionado previamente la creatividad, me gustaría que nos explicaras qué es la creatividad y también si se puede aprender. Gracias. Jesús C. Guillén . Una competencia muy importante en los tiempos actuales. Pero claro, en la creatividad intervienen muchas variables diferentes. Algunos investigadores creen que la creatividad está vinculada a un proceso que nos permite obtener soluciones novedosas, útiles, pero claro, lo novedoso y útil puede ser algo subjetivo. Otros investigadores como Beeman, Kounios sugieren: “Bueno, la creatividad está vinculada a un proceso de reorganización de elementos”. Me da igual que sean notas musicales, letras, colores, productos, para crear algo sorprendente que puede ser una canción, una poesía, un producto, un proyecto, lo que sea. ¿Qué nos dice la neurociencia al respecto? ¿Podemos hacer algo para optimizar la creatividad en el aula? Pues la neurociencia nos envía dos mensajes que creemos que son relevantes. El primero, la creatividad no es innata, puede entrenarse, puede mejorarse. Fantástico. Ahora veremos algunas opciones que creemos que son posibles y que hemos puesto en práctica; en prácticamente todas las etapas educativas. Pero también sugiere algo interesante, se ha visto que cuando nos aparece esa idea feliz, el eureka, hay un patrón de actividad cerebral de ondas lentas. Esto hay que explicárselo también a nuestros hijos, alumnos. Es decir, que cuando estamos bloqueados, intentando resolver un problema, quizás la mejor estrategia no es seguir perseverando en el mismo, sino aparcar el problema, una duchita, una siesta, hacer deporte u otra tarea, que hay toda una serie de mecanismos cerebrales inconscientes que siguen trabajando en el problema y cuando te levantes de la siesta o salgas de la ducha, a lo mejor tienes más información que te permite afrontar el problema. ¿Verdad que os ha pasado esto? Qué interesante. Y claro, como educadores nos tendremos que plantear: “¿Y qué podemos hacer para optimizar la creatividad en el aula?” Pues creemos que hay cuestiones muy relevantes. La primera, vincular los aprendizajes a situaciones reales. Fijaos. Os hago esta pregunta, no hace falta que utilicéis ni calculadora ni el móvil. Cálculo mental, que nos encanta decir a los profesores. Un atleta tarda en recorrer un kilómetro dos minutos y veinte segundos. Memoria de trabajo. Un kilómetro, dos minutos y veinte segundos. ¿Cuánto tardará en recorrer el triple, tres kilómetros? Un kilómetro, dos minutos y veinte segundos. ¿El triple, cuánto? ¿Quién nos da la solución? El número, queremos el número. ¿Seis, siete? Seis sesenta, siete, ¿no? Siete, fantástico. Eso es lo que nos dicen muchos estudiantes, incluso de ciencias. Pero ¿quién te está diciendo que el atleta te va a recorrer los tres kilómetros a velocidad constante? ¿Eso pasa en una carrera real? No pasa. Y ellos saben que no pasa, pero no se lo plantean porque en la educación ha prevalecido la solución única, pero cuando tenemos que afrontar un problema o un reto, cualquier situación en la vida real, hay múltiples formas de afrontarlo. Qué importante para fomentar la creatividad vincular los aprendizajes a situaciones reales, utilizar actividades que no están ligadas a ninguna disciplina concreta, que nos permiten ir trabajando la creatividad. También se ha visto el poder de los buenos proyectos. ¿Verdad que os suena la palabra “proyectos”? Cuando llegas a un colegio, lo primero que ves actualmente es: “trabajamos por proyectos”. La pregunta que nos podríamos plantear es: “¿Y todos los proyectos inciden positivamente sobre el aprendizaje? ¿Cuáles son los que inciden más positivamente?” ¿Nos lo hemos planteado? Pues también las investigaciones, los famosos metaanálisis de John Hattie, nos sugieren algo interesante. Que es muy importante tener en cuenta los conocimientos previos del alumnado, construir sobre lo que ya saben, clarificar los objetivos de aprendizaje, que el profesorado coopere. El factor más influyente sobre el aprendizaje del alumnado es la cooperación entre el profesorado, ¿cooperamos los adultos? Que el profesorado esté formado en este tipo de metodología, pero bien planificados, estos proyectos también pueden, de alguna forma, fomentar el pensamiento creativo. Os ponemos un ejemplo: una unidad didáctica de matemáticas vinculada al cálculo de máximos y mínimos. Podríamos haber utilizado el lenguaje típico de las derivadas, explicar cómo se calcula un máximo, un mínimo con las derivadas, pero no; empezamos con una pregunta abierta, ¿habéis visto la tableta de chocolate Toblerone? La pregunta es: “¿Por qué esta tableta de chocolate tiene esta forma de prisma triangular?” Y así iban aprendiendo los estudiantes, comparaban con otras superficies, otros volúmenes, se iban al supermercado, hacían un estudio de ingresos, costes y os sorprendería ver a estudiantes etiquetados como poco creativos lo bien que se desenvolvían en estas tareas. También vimos que era muy importante guiar el proceso de aprendizaje, que supieran ellos lo que estaban haciendo y por qué lo estaban haciendo. Pero hay más formas también de fomentar el pensamiento creativo, os propongo un reto, sacad la hoja que os hemos entregado antes, la orientáis de forma horizontal y vais a dibujar en esa hoja estas líneas, más o menos. ¿Lo veis todos? ¿En qué consiste el reto? Nos encanta la metodología inductiva. Muy bien, esto era un dibujo, hemos eliminado prácticamente todo el dibujo y nos ha quedado solo esto. En un minuto, un minuto y medio, ya veréis que no vais a necesitar más tiempo, tenéis que rellenar el dibujo, tu dibujo. ¿Empezamos? Venga, vale. “Para que haya una buena cooperación se requiere de una buena educación emocional” Bien, pues ahora nos encantaría que compartierais vuestra obra que habéis dibujado y nos lo explicáis, nos lo enseñáis y nos lo explicáis, ¿vale? Venga va, ¿quién comparte? ¿Qué has dibujado? Juana . Es la parte de un violoncello, la parte de abajo. Juana . Aquí está la efe, ese sería el aro, y se vería así, como de perfil, de canto. Lucía . Para eso sirve el arte, para fomentar un pensamiento abierto, crítico, reflexivo. Qué bueno es esto de abierto. Antes hablábamos de que en la escuela han prevalecido las soluciones únicas y aquí valen todos los dibujos, genial. Todas las variedades artísticas son fantásticas, pero cuando se integra el arte en los contenidos curriculares, ya es… Se ha visto que se consolidan mejor los aprendizajes. ¿Queréis conocer ejemplos reales? Sí, esto se ha hecho. Hemos participado en estas tareas y en estos proyectos. Es posible aprender poesía de Lope de Vega a ritmo de rap, donde cooperan un profesor de matemáticas y una profesora de latín. Genial. No nos gustan las asignaturas porque la vida no está distribuida, ni mucho menos jerarquizada por las asignaturas. Una profesora de historia les pide a sus estudiantes que, utilizando una melodía popular, relaten los sucesos más relevantes de la Revolución Francesa o una profesora de inglés les pide a sus estudiantes que recreen la obra Romeo y Julieta, por supuesto en inglés, pero cambiando el final, que se inventen el final. Eso es un acto creativo. O el profesor de matemáticas les pide a sus estudiantes que escriban unas estrofas donde relatan los pasos que tienen que seguir para aplicar un teorema matemático. Integración, ejemplos de integración de las artes en los contenidos curriculares. A nivel motivacional: potentísimo. Y, a nivel cerebral, ¿qué se ha observado? Pues, que es muy interesante. Estos aprendizajes globalizados, interdisciplinares, así es la vida cotidiana. Facilitan la participación de diferentes redes neuronales, diferentes circuitos, diferentes regiones del cerebro y esto es muy bueno para el aprendizaje. Elena . Hola, Jesús, soy Elena, soy maestra de primaria y te quería preguntar qué solución propone o qué soluciones propone la neuroeducación para la atención a la diversidad que encontramos dentro del aula. Jesús C. Guillén . Uno de los grandes retos educativos. Hemos hablado que la neurociencia nos dice que cada cerebro es único y singular y, entre comillas, anormal. ¿Se tiene en cuenta esto en la educación? ¿Qué creéis, debería tenerse en cuenta? ¿Sí y no? Pero, ¿qué es lo que ocurre? Que, si enseñamos de forma permanente, si evaluamos siempre de la misma forma a los estudiantes, va a ser complicado realmente atender la diversidad en el aula. Asumimos que, por supuesto, no existen soluciones únicas. Algunas estrategias que pueden ser útiles son esos buenos proyectos. Qué importante es la cooperación, el cerebro social llevado al aula. Pero, para que haya una verdadera cooperación se requiere educación emocional. Si los estudiantes no tienen asumidas toda una serie de competencias emocionales imprescindibles vinculadas a la solidaridad, el respeto, la aceptación de la opinión discrepante, no pueden cooperar. Que se vayan introduciendo, como sabéis las maestras de infantil y de primaria, esas estructuras cooperativas, lápices al centro o uno, dos, cuatro, que de alguna forma les permite ir adentrándose en ese trabajo cooperativo. Y luego ya se puede pasar a los buenos proyectos cooperativos y, la investigación, los metaanálisis de John Hattie, por ejemplo, nos sugieren que los proyectos que inciden más sobre el aprendizaje son los que se llaman proyectos Aprendizaje Servicio, los APS: aprender haciendo un servicio a la comunidad. ¡Qué maravilla, qué necesidad! Un centro identifica que en el hospital de la zona hay unos déficits extraordinarios en las transfusiones de sangre, en el banco de sangre del hospital y crean un proyecto fantástico donde van vinculando los contenidos curriculares de biología, emprendeduría, a la vez que van trabajando toda una serie de competencias ligadas a la cooperación, creatividad, solidaridad. En un año se incrementaron las donaciones de sangre, las transfusiones… Espectacular. En estos proyectos que son, por supuesto, interdisciplinares, participan estudiantes de distintas etapas educativas. Así es la vida, todos somos diferentes. Participan profesores de distintas disciplinas, participan las familias, se les invita, no solo a la celebración de los proyectos, también durante. Los equipos directivos y las entidades sociales, toda la comunidad educativa y la sociedad participando en el proceso de mejora de la Educación. Los estudiantes no son realmente los ciudadanos del futuro, son los ciudadanos del presente, están transformando la sociedad desde ya. “No hay mejor estrategia educativa que los proyectos “Aprendizaje Servicio” No hay mejor estructura o estrategia cooperativa que los proyectos APS. Y qué importante, también se ha visto, el poder de la tutoría entre iguales. Lo hemos sabido siempre en el aula. A veces somos somos incapaces de explicar algo con nuestras palabras al chaval, se lo explica el compañero o la compañera y lo entiende mucho mejor, más fácilmente. ¿Por qué? Porque nosotros tenemos automatizado su aprendizaje y la compañera o el compañero lo acaba de aprender, incluso las expectativas que se generan. Ese estudiante con problemáticas a nivel conductual, cuando sabe que tiene que explicar, que hacer algo por otro compañero, en consonancia con el cerebro social, eso es fantástico. Generar climas emocionales positivos, combinar el trabajo individual con el cooperativo, hacer participar a toda la comunidad educativa en el proceso de educación, sabemos que es complicado, pero, desde la perspectiva de la neuroeducación, la escuela tiene que ser inclusiva y tienen que aprender juntos estudiantes totalmente diferentes porque así es la vida real y, cuando salimos a la vida real, nos encontramos el chaval autista y el TDH y la mujer embarazada y la riqueza de la diversidad. Todos somos diferentes y eso hay que tenerlo en cuenta en Educación, asumiendo por supuesto que no existen soluciones únicas y que cada contexto es diferente. Pero hay que hacer el intento. Y si nos cuesta a nivel individual, hacer el intento por cooperar con otros profesores para amplificar el mensaje. Juana . Hola, Jesús, mi nombre es Juana, soy pedagoga musical. Has hecho referencia a la resiliencia anteriormente y me gustaría saber qué es exactamente. Jesús C. Guillén . ¿Todos los materiales soportan de la misma forma un determinado impacto? El vidrio, la madera, los diferentes metales… No. ¿Y nuestros cerebros los impactos de la vida los asumen, los interpretan de la misma forma? No. La resiliencia podríamos decir que es esa capacidad que nos permite a los seres humanos resistir. No somos responsables de los problemas que nos surgen, pero sí de cómo los afrontamos. Ante las situaciones cotidianas que nos pueden provocar un dolor, salir reforzados. El luto, fantástico, bajamos, pero luego, como consecuencia de la resiliencia, salimos reforzados de esa situación. ¿Qué han visto los neurocientíficos, por ejemplo, Richard Davidson, el gran neurocientífico? Que las personas que son capaces de soportar mejor la frustración, las problemáticas que nos ocasiona la vida, es normal, nos pasa, tienen una mejor conexión entre la amígdala y la corteza prefrontal y, no solo eso, las personas más resilientes activan más, tienen un patrón de activación cerebral concreto, la corteza prefrontal izquierda. La resiliencia es un elemento muy, muy importante. Se habla mucho de autoestima, pero ¿y resiliencia? Qué bueno. El pequeño que se cae si se puede levantar solo, ¿por qué vamos a ir en su…? Es muy importante la resiliencia. Y hay muy buenos programas como el americano, el Penn, de los que se han analizado y se han visto realmente sus implicaciones pedagógicas, que son potentísimas. Y se ha visto la importancia en estos programas, bueno, de resiliencia, de cambiar el foco hacia lo positivo, tener en cuenta las virtudes de los estudiantes, generar los climas emocionales en los que se encuentren seguros. No tengan miedo a compartir. En la práctica, pues, bueno, hay muchas actividades dinámicas que se pueden hacer y que hemos hecho también con niños, con adolescentes. Por ejemplo, no sé si os suena la actividad Las tres cosas buenas, especialmente indicada para aquellos estudiantes con bloqueo, con apagón emocional. Consiste esta actividad en identificar, al final del día, tres cosas buenas que nos han pasado y reflexionar: por qué nos han pasado, qué podríamos hacer para repetirlas, qué hemos sentido. Fijaos si cambia el foco de lo negativo a lo positivo. Si este ejercicio se va repitiendo durante los días, en pocas semanas puede llegar a ser beneficioso como sugieren las investigaciones científicas. En el caso de los adolescentes, les encanta analizar casos reales, situaciones de personas que se desarrollaron en entornos muy complicados. Por ejemplo, el neurocirujano Ben Carson, con unas problemáticas familiares y acaba siendo el neurocirujano más importante del mundo. La resiliencia es, realmente, aprender a vivir. Y, para acabar, quiero compartir con todas vosotras y vosotros otra historia real. Pues, bien, un profesor de Harvard, Eric Mazur, años 90, utilizaba la metodología, la clase magistral… Si es que es un comunicador excelente y sus estudiantes estaban muy contentos porque obtenían muy buenos resultados académicos, sacaban muy buenas notas en los exámenes. Sin embargo, en un curso Eric Mazur quiere cambiar la metodología. ¿Cómo es posible? Se ha vuelto loco Eric Mazur, pero si los estudiantes están contentos, obtienen buenos resultados. ¿Son sinónimos rendimiento académico y aprendizaje? Lo sabemos, no. Y eso es lo que analizó durante todo un año un científico prestigioso. No estaban aprendiendo bien física, a pesar de obtener buenos resultados académicos. Sabían enunciar la tercera Ley de Newton: acción-reacción. Pero cuando les planteaba una situación real, un choque entre un camión y un coche, ¿cuál ejerce más fuerza? Por supuesto, el camión porque tiene más masa. O sabían… Se desenvolvían muy bien en los problemas típicos de simbología eléctrica, circuitos eléctricos, pero cuando les planteaba una situación real de un cortocircuito, cortocircuito cerebral. Cambió la metodología. Les hacía preparar los contenidos en casa: vídeos, leer documentos… Y, cuando llegaban al aula, les estaba esperando con una pregunta que tenían que responder, primero, a nivel individual, una pregunta de razonamiento complejo. Ya en los años 90, ellos lo que hacían era utilizar un clicker para votar, él veía los resultados en la pantalla del ordenador. No hace falta ni utilizar los recursos digitales. Pero él se guio en patrón de actuación, y después de ver el porcentaje de aciertos que normalmente estaba entre el 30% y el 70%, los agrupaba, especialmente a aquellos que habían respondido de forma diferente. Discutían, analizaban y volvían a votar. El porcentaje de respuestas correctas se incrementaba. Si había que explicar algo, se explicaba o él o algún estudiante y pasaban a otra pregunta y, así, iban aprendiendo física. Al cabo de unos años, lo analizaron, vuelve a aparecer la cooperación entre el profesorado, y vieron que, de esa forma, aprendían los estudiantes mejor física. Publicado en la prestigiosa revista Science. ¿Cuál era el elemento crítico? ¿La inversión del aprendizaje? No. La tutoría entre iguales. Vuelve a aparecer el cerebro social. Programados para aprender a través de la imitación de la interacción desde el nacimiento. Y es que, efectivamente, una nueva educación es necesaria y posible. Creemos, sinceramente, que estas investigaciones científicas, estos conocimientos que provienen de la neurociencia, de la ciencia cognitiva que se irán ampliando con el paso del tiempo, pueden ser muy útiles. Pero para mejorar la Educación hace falta la participación de toda la comunidad educativa. Vosotros, los profesores, sois muy importantes; las familias, sois super importantes. Hemos analizado antes qué incidencia tan brutal tienen sobre el aprendizaje los buenos proyectos, los proyectos APS, Aprendizaje Servicio.
