Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate full-time opportunity at its Croswell Factory for a Mechanic in the Packaging and Warehouse Department. This position is an hourly position working a variable schedule and is part of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers Local # 263-G. Job Summary The Mechanic will be responsible for maintenance and repair of the packaging warehouse sugar path equipment, production packaging machinery. The employee is expected to follow all GMP/SQF guidelines while continuously maintaining quality and improving production. Primary Responsibilities Perform safe and efficient maintenance in and around P&W, following all SQF, GMP, and MIOSHA guidelines. Make rounds throughout the Warehouse verifying equipment operation is as intended, communication and resolving issues as they arise. Troubleshoot mechanical repairs and perform changeovers on packaging equipment. Communicate with Vendors, Storekeeper, Warehouse Leader, and Warehouse Management to ensure correct parts are being ordered and stored. Locate items in the storeroom as needed and properly sign out parts to the correct equipment number/work order number. Provide support to Warehouse Leaders and Warehouse E/I to minimize downtime and production loss. Monitor and repair all inbound & outbound sugar path equipment and perform predictive and preventative maintenance. Respond to radio calls for as needed, while prioritizing importance and reporting any downtime exceeding 20 minutes to Warehouse Leader or Supervisor/Manager. Utilize AMMS or other CMMS systems to complete assigned work orders, working with the Storekeeper to assure inventory and labor is being added to the work order for future maintenance planning. Communicate changes made or work performed at shift change, verify an accurate information hand off to promote equipment efficiency. Utilize electronic and paper documentation to aid in the safe and efficient repair of all equipment, determine proper troubleshooting and repair methods, and procurement of appropriate repair items. Measure and determine size and quantity of materials & manage inventories. Use various technical tools and measuring devices including but not limited; to caliper, alignment tool, vibration analyzer, tachometer, torque wrench, infrared thermometer. Understand and utilize appropriate PPE to safely perform work, as needed. Safe rigging and lifting equipment and parts multiple floors in and around P&W. Other tasks as assigned by management. Position Qualifications Certificate or license in maintenance / mechanical field. High School diploma or equivalent. Preferred 3+ years of industrial mechanic work. Preferred knowledge of general equipment maintenance and compressed air systems. Ability to navigate through computers and equipment PLCs to operate machinery. Key Competencies Ability to work SAFELY with minimal supervision, near moving mechanical parts, in high places. Identify and utilize PPE such as, but not limited to; hearing protection, hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, dust masks or respirators, etc. Ability to work in an environment with exposure to extreme heat and cold, wet, hot, and/or humid conditions, airborne particles, and chemicals. Effectively communicate concerns related to safety, equipment, inventory, and other issues that may arise. Self-starting and self-motivation, the ability to find and perform work without direct supervision. Troubleshoot equipment or system failure to determine time and or materials needed. Root Cause Analysis. Must acquire and maintain licenses for equipment needed to perform all functions of Warehouse Mechanic such as; sky track, man lift, telehandler, PIT, etc. Must be able to correctly, safely, and effectively operate all equipment required to support Warehouse Operations. Basic understanding of measuring devices, such as tape measure, calipers, micrometer, plastigage and other such instruments. Understand tolerances and clearance/interference, for instance between a shaft and a bore. Demonstrate the ability to read/understand prints, schematics, and dimensioned drawings. Will need to attend periodic training classes to update licensing, improve or add to required skills. Ability to communicate effectively in all situations. Ability to solve problems quickly and make decisions. Demonstrated personal leadership and positive can-do attitude. Flexible and able to work in fast paced and varying environments.
