Under the direction of the Lead Cardiac Sonographer and Technical Director, the Cardiac Sonographer performs cardiac ultrasound exams according to departmental policy and standards. Primary Responsibilities 1. Performs M-mode, two dimensional, three dimensional, spectral and color Doppler echocardiograms according to the established laboratory protocol and modified as needed by patient variability; reviews medical record for pertinent history. Communicates with reading physicians regarding echocardiogram findings. Performs saline contrast studies and UEA studies as per protocol. 2. Generates preliminary reports with all protocol specified measurements. 3. Determines priority for requested studies and revises schedule as needed to perform urgent outpatient and emergency inpatient studies; recognizes important and life-threatening abnormalities on the echocardiogram and calls them to the immediate attention of the director or physicians. 4. Instructs cardiac and anesthesia fellows in scanning technique. Identifies patients with echocardiographic findings of importance or uniqueness for the hospital's and medical staff's teaching and research program. 5. Assists in training new echocardiography staff. Instructs techniques of echocardiography (scanning and interpretation) to fellow, house officers, students and new colleagues. 6. Monitors supply inventory and notifies manager to re-order; maintains equipment in clean, running order and notifies manager if equipment repair is warranted. 7. Treats all patient information and laboratory findings in a confidential manner; responds to all patients in a courteous and professional manner. 8. Maintains knowledge of echocardiography with attendance at weekly conferences and attendance at conferences/CME events. Maintain minimum CME requirements as per ARDMS/CCI. 9. In addition to the above responsibilities, the level II sonographer must maintain a professional contribution in two or more of the following areas: IV insertion Active participation of an educational activity within the last 12 months (active participation in a regional or national educational activities i.e. faculty, board member) HCM Stress Echo Performs stress echo/dobutamine stress echo Actively scanning and competent in intraprocedural Cath lab studies Active and ongoing participation in research studies/QI projects (within the last 12 months) 5 years' experience scanning ACS credential FASE designation Required Qualifications 1. Vocational or Technical training in echocardiography. 2. Basic Life Support RDCS (ARDMS) or RCS (CCI) certification. New graduates are expected to obtain RDCS/RCS certification within 3 months of hire date. 3. Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology either through college level courses in biology and anatomy and/or relevant acquired experience. Preferred Qualifications 1. Graduation of an accredited echocardiography program. 2. At least three years of experience performing echocardiograms in a hospital setting Competencies Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Age-based Competencies: Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 - over. Social/Environmental Requirements: 1. Work requires close attention to tasks for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the workday do not compromise the work. 2. Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist This role focuses on using various imaging techniques and practices to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Ultrasound duties: Utilizes Ultrasound Technology to provide images of internal body structures. A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, and experience. This role will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. An experienced level role requiring basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and requiring vocational or technical education. Works under moderate supervision, works through problems of a routine nature, but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures and communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation. Job Overview Under the direction of the supervising clinical leader, effectively performs all phases of cardiac ultrasound studies according to Policy and Procedure in a safe, accurate and timely manner which are necessary for cardiological diagnosis. Under minimal supervision, this position performs and interprets a variety of diagnostic cardiac ultrasound procedures including m-mode, 2-D real time imaging and Doppler techniques (pulsed, CW, and color). Assists physicians in obtaining transesophageal, intraoperative, and three-dimensional studies. Assists physicians in obtaining and recording data for research projects. Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follows infection control practices. Maintains a good working knowledge of charging and billing process. Responsible for charging appropriately. Prepares patient, explains procedures to patient (and family) and obtains clinical information from patient's cardiology chart prior to exam. Obtains permanent video or digital recordings and tracings from the ultrasound unit. Makes appropriate measurements and calculations from information obtained during exam. Acquisition and exporting of three-dimensional echocardiographic data, and off-line computer analysis of the data set for more detailed assessment of cardiac anatomy and quantification of cardiac function. Ensures that all tests are officially read by the cardiologist; contributes technical and professional knowledge to final diagnostic impressions on reports, participates actively in echo reading sessions. Proofreads the final official echo report before it is sent to medical records. Participates in quality control and quality assurance on all ultrasonic equipment and instrumentation by recording and maintaining documentation for review. Maintains order and cleanliness of all equipment and work areas to ensure that all maintenance and infectious disease control guidelines are met. Assists supervisor in the technical training of new sonographers and/or interns. Develops and maintains a teaching file system. Assists in maintaining and ordering supplies as designated by supervisor. Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, occasional sitting & walking, lifting of 30-35 lbs. Pushing, pulling & moving stretchers and ultrasound machines. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate transducers, ultrasound equipment & computer keyboard. Hearing and visual sufficient to perform examinations, observe patients, read monitors and documents, hear equipment and hospital alarms. Close contact with patients having contagious diseases. Exposure to patients injected with radioisotopes. Frequent contacts with patients, physicians, patients' families, and other personnel throughout the hospital. Skills & Abilities: An in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology is also required so the technologist can evaluate laboratory data, past medical history and pertinent symptoms to tailor the ultrasound examination to each patient individually in a safe, accurate and timely manner. Proficient in small parts, venous, and carotid ultrasounds and procedures requiring ultrasound guidance. Ability to perform exams in Doppler, M-mode, B-scan and real time modalities. Ability to concentrate for long periods of time under various conditions while acquiring diagnostic information. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. Ability to work independently to perform exams and will seek out assistance from others and supervisor as necessary.
