Description SUMMARY Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul trucks, buses, construction equipment, and all types of diesel engines. RESPONSIBILITIES Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, hammers, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists. Practice safe hoisting and jacking techniques. Practice safe use and disposal of solvents. Using micrometers and gauges, inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to examine parts for damage or excessive wear. Replace parts as needed. Replace defective engines or subassemblies, such as transmissions. Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment. Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists. Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery. Test drive trucks, buses, and overhauled equipment to diagnose malfunctions and ensure operating efficiency. Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices. Weld broken parts and structural members. Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions. Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges. Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors. Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Perform other duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
