Job Summary and Qualifications The Surgical Assistant will assist the attending physician with the diagnostic/operative procedures performed in the operative suite. He/she will assist nursing and anesthesia personnel in the surgical area with patient and equipment problems as required. He/she will comply with the standards of practice established and collaborate with all members of the healthcare team to provide a quality, comprehensive and coordinated delivery of care. Will comply with all hospital and department policies and established procedures. Considers age-related factors in care, treatment, education and evaluation of patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics. Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures. Job Functions 1. Assists physician in performance of surgical procedure by holding retractors, providing tissue exposure and anticipating surgeon needs during procedure. 2. Participates in rapid turnover of operating room between cases by helping open sterile supplies, applying tourniquet when appropriate, helping with patient transfer and moving equipment into and out of room obtaining x-rays if appropriate and following direction of circulating nurse in preparing for case. 3. Implements OR department and hospital standards of care, protocols, and procedures in a knowledgeable and consistent manner. 4. Demonstrates awareness of safety issues and applies safety measures as listed in OR and hospital policy. 5. Assists circulating nurse in setting up room ensuring presence and proper functioning of all necessary equipment and instruments. 6. When not needed in an assist role, performs related duties including but not limited to: assist in cleaning and stocking; picking cases for next day; housekeeping duties; and attending staff meetings. Directly involved in room turnover between cases. 7. Works as a collaborative member of the OR team. Demonstrates ability to adjust to different situations at any given time. Anticipate needs of surgical team on field. Takes direction from circulating nurse What qualifications you will need: Education: Graduate of an accredited First Assist program and/or Graduate of Medical School. Completion of Surgical Technologist Course or equivalent required. Certification: Surgical Technologist certification preferred. BLS through American Red Cross (AHA and military certifications accepted) is required upon hire. Licensure: Current license as Surgical First Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia Experience: Two years OR scrubbing experience required. Previous First Assistant experience preferred. About the role: The Surgical Technician II position independently performs intermediate to advanced technical procedures and works with research staff as part of the Vivarium's Surgical Services program. This includes pre-, intra-, and post-operative animal care for survival or acute studies and prepares animals for various surgical procedures. This position will also provide support for a variety of laboratory animal species, including, but not limited to mice and rats, with a focus on ensuring the highest degree of animal care and welfare while supporting research in a dynamic team-oriented environment. Five years of experience working with vertebrate animal species, with at least three years of experience performing micro-surgical procedures under a microscope in a research environment.
