Job Description
The Urban Forestry Specialist performs services, activities and projects to maintain, restore and build the City Urban Forest to a high level of function, safety and public satisfaction. This position is a beginning Part Time position with the Urban Forestry Division under the Public Works & Water Utilities Department. Responsibilities: Perform all services, activities and projects through the Urban Forester, which will include the maintenance/operation of specific and assigned equipment used in the care of the Urban Forest. Participate in the development and implementation of policies and follow Safety Policies and Procedures aligned with the ANSI Z133 for PPE and ANSI 300 for Tree Pruning. Inspect assigned street tree sidewalks for trees not meeting the standard over a sidewalk and properly prune them for safety height clearance. Install new trees assigned to the Urban Forestry Program for installation, following the IFAS requirement guidelines on properly planting new trees. Set up and support the watering, upkeep and general maintenance including “water bags”, tree ring care and pruning for structure. Inspect work sites before, during and after completion to assure work is completed in a highly satisfactory and thorough manner. Ensure all tools, equipment and vehicles are properly stored away. Assist with the maintenance of time, material and equipment use. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of municipal tree care and management of the Urban Forest. Respond to and report difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and report all incidents to the Urban Forester or immediate supervisor. Work as a valuable and dependable team player to assist and improve services, activities and projects in the Urban Forestry Program. Driving of City Vehicles (A valid Florida Driver’s License is required). Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to understand and carry out programs, policies and operational needs. Ability to complete work orders in a timely manner. Familiarity with the materials, methods, practices and equipment used in parks, grounds and tree maintenance plus able to perform equipment repairs. Types and levels of operations, maintenance and repair activities generally performed in municipal urban forestry or park and grounds operations. Safe use of tools, equipment and vehicles used in daily duties. Able to spot and report tree health issues as they occur. Planting mixtures and fertilization requirements. Material Safety and Handling Standards management skill. Methods, materials, tools and techniques used in landscape techniques, plantings and pruning of trees. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to clearly answer questions from the public. Required Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent. One (1) year experience in the forestry/tree care, landscape maintenance, park operations or related field. Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License, Class D or higher. Able to drive a street-worthy ATV type unit. Complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within 6 months of completion of probationary period.
