Base pay range $33.68/hr - $38.72/hr Job Title: Registered Nurse- Infection Control Job Code: RN IC Department: Infection Control/Employee Health Division: Nursing Reports to: Manager of Infection Control Salary Level: Non-Exempt 13 Last Revised: November 2021 Primary Function This incumbent is responsible for participation in Infection Control and Employee Health Activities. These activities include prevention, surveillance, and documentation to reduce the transmission of infections and promote a healthy workplace environment. This incumbent maintains liaison and collaboration with other employees, departments, agencies, and community organizations in preserving the community’s public health. Job Description
Responsible for implementing and following Infection Control, Employee Health, and Disinfection and Sterilization program policies and procedures. Participates in IC and EH activities within the organization including infection control surveillance of CIHA and associated clinics. Assesses and provides immunizations of all employees. Conducts annual health screenings assuring current status of immunizations and testing in order to meet the minimal employment requirements. Tracks occupational health trends. Assists in planning, developing, and implementing employee health programs targeting identified trends improving the health of the employee. Maintains documentation of immunizations and employee health. Provides new employee orientation to infection control principles and practices and employee health. Provides annual infection control training for all hospital staff and provides updates and reviews of infection control principles and practices as required or as changes occur. Maintains files and prepares reports on Infection Control and Employee Health Activities. Participates on the Environment of Care Committee. Participates in daily multidisciplinary inpatient rounds and assesses for hospital acquired infections to ascertain the possibility for epidemic potential and proper precautions needed to avoid transmission to other patients and hospital staff. Assists in tracking all infectious disease. Provides patient education and follow up as necessary. Performs other related duties as required.
Education/Experience
Bachelor or Associate Degree in nursing from an accredited program required. Two years of nursing experience preferred. At least 2 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in a clinical setting and experience reflects knowledge of Infection Control techniques or has certification as an Infection Control Specialist. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is required for the position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be substituted for BCLS. Applicant must have an unrestricted valid Registered Nurse license within the state of North Carolina or a state that is accepted as reciprocity.
Job Knowledge
Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, and theories of professional nursing in order to plan and provide nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs of patients of all ages; specifically, Infancy (Birth-1 year), Toddler and Early Childhood (2-5 Years), Latency (6-9 years), Preadolescence (10-12 years), Early Adolescence (13-15 years), Adolescence (16-20 years), Adult (21-64 years), and Elderly (65+ years). Knowledge of the nursing process and its application to clinical practice. Knowledge of disease process, health care treatment and systems, and treatment protocols. Knowledge of infection control and employee health principles and practices including epidemiology, communicable disease, and occupational health. Knowledge and ability to analyze the results of various medical procedures and translate onto appropriate plans of care. Knowledge and ability to independently plan and organize work in order to meet priorities, accomplish work within established time frames and work in stressful situations. Knowledge of the culture and health profile of the patient population. Knowledge of processes and procedures for establishing, revising, continually monitoring, and evaluating standards for Infection Control, Employee Health, and Disinfection and Sterilization. Knowledge of Electronic Health Record documentation. Professional Communication skills are a must. Must communicate and interact with all other employees, community members, and employees of surrounding health care facilities. Knowledge of JCAHO accreditation standards, nursing quality improvement standards, IHS, CDC, and OSHA regulations. Knowledge of clinical teaching methodologies and methods of evaluating the effectiveness of teaching strategies.
Complexity of Duties Requirements are complex in that they require comprehensive skills in Infection Control and Employee Health and have sufficient knowledge of infectious disease and epidemiological processes. The work may involve difficult interactions with the clinical and support staff, tribal, federal, and state organizations and agencies and require maximum skills in diplomacy and judgment. Work includes a variety of JCAHO, Performance Improvement, and Infection Control and Employee Health activities simultaneously. It requires continued effort to stay abreast of changing standards and to gain compliance of hospital staff. Guidelines consist of professional standards of practice as determined by the nurse practice act, nursing, and medical policies and procedures. Must also, comply with Infection Control Policies, State and Federal guidelines, HCFA, FPM, DHHS, PHS, CDC, OSHA, and HIS regulations. These guidelines are not always specifically applicable to the individual patient or situation and independent judgment is required in selecting the most appropriate guideline, and applying the intent. Supervision Received Incumbent receives administrative guidance from the Manager of Infection Control and Employee Health. Works within the framework of regulations, policies and procedures established by the agency, HCFA, CDC, OSHA, and NC State Health Department. Further guidance is received from professional literature and CIHA Directives. This employee is expected to exercise a high degree of independent initiative and judgment in the deliverance of quality care and duty requirements. The Director of Nursing Services sets the overall objectives and resources available for all Associate Administrators of Nursing and support personnel. Responsibility for Accuracy Incumbent responsibility for accuracy is of prime importance. Identifying infection risks and addressing them appropriately can aid patients, employees, and community. Errors can potentially harm patients, staff, and organizational reputation. All work must be in compliance with CIHA policy and procedure, and with PHS, IHS, CDC, OSHA, and JCAHO requirements. Documentation must accurately mirror services that have been provided. Contact with Others Contacts include all hospital employees, tribal health staff and IHS personnel. Contacts also include employees from surrounding healthcare facilities and consultants from CDC, OSHA, and State Health Departments. Contacts with hospital personnel are to obtain information concerning the employee’s occupational health care problems and needs. Contacts with other health care or related disciplines are for the purpose of coordination, collaboration, and consultation in meeting the employee’s health care needs or in meeting the goals and objectives of the Infection Control program. Confidential Data The Privacy Act of 1974 mandates that the incumbent shall maintain complete confidentiality of all administrative medical and all pertinent information that comes to his/her attention or knowledge. The act carries both civil and criminal penalties for unlawful disclosure of records. Violations of such confidentiality shall be cause for adverse action. Mental/Visual/Physical Work in various services within the nursing division requires moderate amount of walking, standing, and bending. Pushing and lifting are required in moving equipment and other supplies. Direct patient care may be required. This individual must lead as an example in good infection control practices. The ability to cope with contracting various agencies in coordination of services and coping with constant changes is required. Some mental stress may be associated with decision–making. May occasionally move more than 15 pounds. Environment Provides activities from an office setting as well as providing monitoring activities in hospital and clinical areas, involves moderate risks of exposure to infectious disease, radiation, and electrical hazards.
