Job Description
The Cherokee Mental Health Institute (CMHI), an Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) specialty care facility, is seeking a qualified electrician to join the maintenance team to perform new electrical installations and maintain existing electrical devices and infrastructure. This position will work closely with another staff electrician to complete work orders and ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations across the CMHI facility and campus. The successful candidate will be a team player that appreciates working in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities include:
Repair outlets, light fixtures, large and small appliances, and other electrical infrastructure. Pull wiring for new electrical installations. Troubleshoot various items and situations involving electrical service. Understand and work with fire protection devices including sprinklers and alarms. Understand and work on elevators. Applicants will be required to complete a background check to be considered for this position. Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification: Three years of full-time work experience in skilled electrical work in the construction or repair of residential or commercial buildings. Successful completion of a standard electrician program at an accredited trade school. A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where one semester of an approved trade school electrician program is equivalent to six months of full-time experience. Successful completion of three years of an approved electrician apprenticeship program. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Trades Helper which involved electrical duties.
Additional Requirements:
Must be capable of operating forklift and other material handling equipment, and other heavy mobile equipment as necessary such as scissor lifts, manlifts, and other aerial platforms. Must be willing to work weekends and after hours performing assigned tasks, and must be willing to respond to on-call requirements on weekends and after hours. Must obtain and maintain a valid Iowa Driver’s License. Certified Licensed Electrician is preferred.
About CMHI: CMHI provides active inpatient treatment to adults in need of acute psychiatric care. The facility offers several services including individualized treatment plans. Support for patients with special education needs to continue their education is provided, and individuals are encouraged to collaborate with staff members in formulating their own plan.
