Job Summary The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring multiple Heavy Equipment Mechanics at the Maple Grove and Oakdale locations. These positions are responsible for maintaining, repairing, fabricating, and modifying MnDOT equipment and are required to work alone on a regular basis with minimal supervision. In addition, these positions will be responsible for evaluating mechanical failures and deciding which shop repairs are most practical, as well as monitoring unit conditions and assisting shop supervisors in the evaluation of equipment as needed. Other responsibilities include maintaining records of time, materials, and supplies; using computer diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot problems, as well as using computer programs to enter work orders and activities. Overtime, weekend, and nighttime work is possible, especially during the snow and ice season. The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Completion of a Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship program or graduation from a two year Heavy Equipment Mechanic or related training program that includes: diagnosis and repair of engine, drive, train, brakes, steering/suspension and hydraulics for heavy equipment, e.g. trucks, tractors, buses; training in electronics sufficient to make engine adjustments and diagnose problems; and training in the use of computerized testing equipment and/or onboard computers sufficient to diagnose problems and adjust the functions of components. OR Approximately three (3) years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic which includes: diagnosis, repair, maintenance and modification of both heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment and gasoline powered vehicles; diagnosis and repair of engines, brakes, drive train, steering/suspension and hydraulics; use of electronics sufficient to make engine adjustments and diagnose problems; and the use of computerized testing equipment and/or onboard computers sufficient to diagnose problems and adjust the functions of components. AND A valid class D driver's license with the requirement to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction AND tanker endorsement within one (1) year of hire , (MnDOT will provide vehicle). Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in a set area with tool carts, sinks, hoists, and supplies easily accessible (i.e. the mechanics shop). The employee frequently uses gross and fine dexterity in a variety of positions including reaching outward and overhead, bending, working with outstretched arms and/or while lying on the back (i.e. on a creeper), climbing up onto a large vehicle, working from heights and bending over. The employee works with power tools, machinery/instruments and equipment, and hand tools requiring the frequent lifting and/or carrying/holding of supplies and parts up to 50 pounds. The employee will infrequently move between 50 and 70 pounds by pushing, pulling, or lifting and carrying. Working conditions include vision, noise, vibration, respiratory and chemical hazards, and occasional adverse weather conditions (heat, cold snow, rain, wind). The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate through writing, speaking and hearing, and also able to communicate with the use of electronic communication equipment, i.e., telephone, 2-way radio, computer, etc. Additional Requirements All job offers are contingent upon the candidate passing a Criminal Background Check, Physical Exam, Drug Screening (if applicable), Employment Verification, Reference Checks, SEMA4 Records Check and Driver's License Screening at the required level for the position with NONE of the following: a major traffic conviction in the past 5 years OR 4 or more minor violations OR 3 or more at-fault accidents in the last 3 years OR any combination of minor violations and at-fault accidents totaling 4 or more occurrences. Candidates that currently have a Commercial Driver's License or CDL permit will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone). Incumbents will be required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called in the event of an emergency and/or snow and ice event.
