JOB DUTIES: The Social Worker IV is responsible for working with all types of patients/residents admitted and to provide crisis intervention, family therapy, and to serve as a comprehensive care manager for individual patients/residents. This position handles complex cases and provides technical guidance to doctors, other hospital staff, including social workers, and outside agencies on the methods and procedures for handling cases. The position also ensures compliance with State and Federal guidelines. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed by the infant (0-1 year), pediatric (2-10 years), adolescent (11-18 years), adult (19-64 years) to geriatric (65 years plus) patient groups. MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK SHIFTS AS NECESSARY BASED ON HOSPITAL OPERATIONS; SERVICES ARE PROVIDED 24/7.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.
EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Social Work.
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of specialized social work experience; such experience must have demonstrated ability to perform the most difficult and complex assignments. One (1) year experience in a healthcare setting preferred. Supervisory Aptitude: Is the demonstration of an aptitude for the performance of supervisory duties. Supervisory Aptitude may be demonstrated through completion of regular or special assignments involving responsibility for some supervisory functions; by serving as a group or team leader; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor stating the possession of interpersonal skill indicative of supervisory potential.
DESIRED SKILLS: A thorough working knowledge of the philosophy, theory, practice and techniques of professional social work, including community mental health; various treatment modalities; principles and practices of interviewing and effectively communicating with those from other systems and cultural backgrounds; socioeconomic problems of the community as they relate to consumers of medical and psychiatric services; the laws, rules and regulations as they impact on the consumers of these services, and the working of the legal system with which the medical and mental health systems interface. Ability to obtain and evaluate social history and other information and to be able to arrive at sound individual and family assessments; formulate appropriate treatment plans and goals based upon the assessment, and skill in carrying out the treatment plans; work effectively with others, particularly with members of the multi-disciplinary team; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; maintain an objective and emotionally stable attitude; learn and apply the principles and practices of supervision. Willingness to accept and carry out special assignments and additional duties when requested.

LICENSURE: A valid State of Hawaii driver’s license. LSW preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner; able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position; function independently, have personal integrity, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with other personnel. Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs); mostly intermittently throughout the day; occasionally lifts supplies/equipment; manual dexterity and mobility; field of vision; ability to see peripherally; may be exposed to infections and contagious diseases, i.e., TB, AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses; subject to electrical and radiant energy hazards; is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies and personnel, etc. under all conditions and circumstances.
