Job Description
CHIEF OPERATOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT Directs the operation and maintenance of the Amsterdam Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and associated pump stations. Reports directly to the Plant Manager Responsible for maintaining compliance with the City's permit to discharge wastewater (SPDES) in accordance with USEPA and NYSDEC regulations. Prepares monthly Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR), Reports of Noncompliance Events (RONE) and all requested information for submittal to EPA and NYSDEC. Interfaces with regulatory personnel from all pertinent agencies. Ensures all sampling procedures are in accordance with SPDES compliance. Makes process control adjustments to optimize plant performance. Makes regular inspections of plant and equipment. Prepares requisitions for purchase of supplies and materials, tracks and logs purchases. Maintains continuous inventory of supplies, chemicals and equipment. Administers septage receiving program. Oversees contract with sludge hauler and determines most efficient dewatering schedule. Required Qualifications: Must possess a NYSDEC 4A Wastewater Operator Certification. Must have working knowledge of principles of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment. Must have working knowledge of preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance for all wastewater equipment. Excellent written and verbal skills are essential. Working knowledge of basic computer software and programs for preparation of memo's, letters, spreadsheets and e-mail. Experience in administration of union contracts and engaging in union issues to ensure efficient plant operations. Civil Service Position.
