Job Description Summary The mission of the Research Associate through the Chemical Advanced Resolution Methods Laboratory shared facility is to serve as an enabling resource for research and development programs at Michigan Tech. We aim to develop novel instrumental capabilities for environmental and biological complex mixtures with a newly acquired Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Elite Mass Spectrometer (high resolution Orbitrap Elite MS) and a Dionex UltiMate 3000 two-dimensional liquid chromatograph (2d LC). Responsible for management and operation of the 2d-LC and high resolution Orbitrap Elite MS and associated equipment to benefit users from multiple disciplines across campus and external. Essential Duties & Responsibilities 1. Stimulate the application of advanced chromatography and mass spectrometry methods to the research programs at Michigan Tech and for external users. 2. Provide expertise in advanced mass spectrometry methods and operation of an Orbitrap Elite, UltiMate3000 LC System, LC/MS, GC/MS, and ICP/MS. Collaborate with university researchers and guide them in preparing and analyzing their samples. 3. Instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. 4. Analytical method development for researchers with various project goals. 5. Assistance with data analysis for various projects. 6. Teaching students and researchers about how to go about data analysis for various projects. 7. Assisting PIs with proposal planning and writing (acting as Co-PI and/or Senior Personnel on multiple projects). 8. Providing information for publications that result from work in the lab (including editing and proof-reading in some cases). 9. Ordering supplies. 10. Keeping track of the budget. 11. Reallocating funds from users to the instrument accounts. 12. Applying for instrumental use fees yearly. 13. Assisting in writing yearly update reports and funding asks from the core facility budget. 14. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. 15. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures • PhD in Chemistry or closely related field. Required Experience • 3 Years of laboratory research experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities • Working knowledge of mass spectrometry and chromatography principles and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary applications of the instrumental techniques. • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. • Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
