Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Lifeguard position includes the following duties: Assists the Head Guards, Pool Managers, Aquatics Coordinators, and Recreation Supervisor in the daily operations of the aquatics facilities by performing tasks and duties as assigned. Ensures exceptional safety standards are always maintained to protect the patrons and staff of the aquatic facilities. Lifeguards are expected to be available throughout the entire season for at least 20 hours per week and up to 40 hours per week unless otherwise requested during the job interview.
The City has implemented two bonus programs for seasonal staff!
Referral Bonus Any applicant can refer up to 4 candidates ($50* per candidate). Rehires are not eligible to be referred but are encouraged to refer other candidates. The person who referred the candidate does NOT need to be an active employee at the time of the application. Family members are NOT eligible to be referred.
Onboarding Bonus All seasonal employees who are fully onboarded and ready to work by May 1st will receive a $100* bonus *All applicable taxes will be deducted from the bonus payments.
Essential Job Functions
Maintains active supervision of patrons in the facility while on duty, and refrains from distractions while on duty. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately following the facility's Emergency Action Plan. Knows, understands, and consistently enforces safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic facility. Rules are explained and applied in a courteous, professional, and firm manner. Checks facility for hazardous conditions; reports concern to Supervisor. Maintains cleanliness of facility including pool, pool deck, lawn, and restrooms Attends all required pre-and in-service training covering a variety of topics. Participates in emergency drills and procedures to the standard of the American Red Cross Always presents a professional appearance and attitude and maintains a high standard of customer service. **Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A typical way to qualify is one year of high school or equivalent life experience or one year of experience at a pool facility.
Licensure or Certification Requirements
Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer First Aid, and Administering Emergency Oxygen certificate, or ability to obtain before employment required. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or nationally recognized certificate, or the ability to obtain before employment required. Valid and current Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna

Important Job Functions
Maintain high standards of safety in all aquatics operations, always adhering to industry standards. Required to utilize specialized personal protective equipment. Provide availability and scheduling information following assigned deadlines. Assist in programming for swim meets and special events. Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor, Aquatics Coordinators, Pool Managers, and Head Lifeguards

Adhere to regulations, policies, and procedures required by the State of Ohio, Franklin County Board of Health, the City of Gahanna, and all other regulatory/governing bodies. Understand and follow instructions from Pool Manager, Aquatics Coordinator, and Recreation Supervisor Enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures for the public.
Working Conditions:
The employee is subject to inside and outside environment conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires swimming, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.
Seasonal employees are eligible to participate in the Ohio Public Employment Retirement (OPERS). 01
