Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. Duties & Responsibilities
Under direct supervision by a Registered Professional Nurse, surgeon, or other healthcare professional, serves as part of a medical team providing surgical care to patients; facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Surgical Technologist on the Labor and Deliver Unit scrubs on Obstetrical Cases in the operating Room; Assists with other surgical procedures and ensures that delivery trays are set up for deliveries. There are two (2) Assignment Levels within this class of positions; all personnel perform related work. 1. Provides nursing care to patients entering operating room suites; (e.g.) making patient comfortable and safeguarding them from exposure and accidents and/or performs technical activities in specialty suites and specialty areas apart from operating room suites. 2. Verifies patient's identity. 3. Prepares operating room for surgery, inspects and tests equipment, selects instruments and replenishes supplies and assist with sterilization of instruments and other materials as required. 4. Transports patient to and from operating or procedure table, restrains and assists in positioning patient and exposure of operative area. 5. Assists circulating nurse, physicians and anesthetist and engages in scrubbing including procedures requiring sterile techniques preparatory to, during and after surgery. 6. Assists surgeon throughout the operative procedure including passing and wiping instruments, preparing sutures, etc. including maintenance of accurate account of instruments, needles, sponges, laparotomy pads, and rings. 7. Assists in recovery room as the need arises. 8. Sets up instruments for deliveries occurring in patient rooms 9. Collects patient's chart, x-rays and equipment and assists with the transfer of patient to assigned unit. 10. Cares for specimens, culture, amputated parts, instruments, needles and equipment and maintains asepsis. Assists with the cleaning of the Operating Room and the replenishment. 11. Stocks and replenishes supplies in the delivery rooms 12. May perform functions and activities of the basic nurse's aide in support to above task. 13. Checks the bulletin board daily for notices and changes schedule. 14. Knows and understands the operation of all equipment. 15. Checks daily to keep abreast with new changes in the operating room. 16. Keeps abreast with new techniques and procedures. 17. Understands and performs standardization of set-ups. 18. Practices economical use of supplies. 19. Has knowledge of Fire and Disaster Procedures. 20. Has knowledge of Cardiac Arrest Procedures. 21. Has knowledge of location of fire alarms, fire extinguisher and fire hose. 22. Participation in Performance Improvement activities.
Minimum Qualifications 1. Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or 2. Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Special Note : Effective January 1, 2015, any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.
