They prepare surgical equipment and help surgical assists and surgeons before, during, and after a surgical procedure. Some on-the-job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: coordinating with multidisciplinary facility team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans, maintaining accurate, detailed reports and records, and providing individualized, non-judgemental, non-discriminatory care to all patients, families, and staff. To apply as a surgical technologist with Nomad, you must have an active National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting- or National Center for Competency Testing-issued certification or active first assistant certification from NBSTSA, NCCSA or ABSA, as well as evidence of at least one year of experience as a Adult Cardiothoracic surgical tech or first assistant, and evidence of one year of experience within your specialty/modality within the past three years. If you are not certified, you must have at least 10 years of surgical tech experience, but it is ultimately up to each facility whether or not they accept non-certified surgical techs. In addition, you must have graduated from an accredited school within your discipline, and score 80% or higher on all Nomad Health competency exams. The Surgical Technologist and/or the Certified Surgical Technologist prepares the room and gathers supplies needed for surgical procedures; delivers instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other members of the surgical team intra operatively; may function as second assistant to the surgeon; assists in the proper decontamination of the room, supplies and instruments post operatively. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Prepares for surgical cases by obtaining and preparing appropriate supplies, equipment and instruments, reviews surgeon's preferences to determine required items. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and presents instruments to the operating team. Delivers appropriate instruments/supplies utilizing proper principles of sterile technique. Acts as 2nd assistant to surgeon, performing duties related to draping, operative site exposure. Responsible for removal of all sharps and initials return card for verification. Functions as 2nd circular with RN supervision. Can hold extremities. Assist with casting and splinting. Mixes medications on the sterile field once verification by a registered nurse has occurred. Assist with positioning, can fix specimens in formalin, may do in annual competency , assists circulator in proper care and handling of surgical specimens. Can wash and thaw grafts, can hold a stapler while surgeon fires it, can operate skin stapler for the purpose of wound approximation, and can assist with the dislocation of joints if yearly competency is accomplished. Can cut suture material as directed by and under the supervision of a surgeon, Can apply ESU to clamps or forceps for hemostatis under the direct supervision of the surgeon, can assist anesthesia if yearly competency is accomplished, Can assist with patient skin prep if yearly competency is accomplished, Can change out camera and robotic instruments during endoscopic procedures under the direct supervision of the surgeon, Can manipulate the uterus during robotic cases under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Job Description Summary: OhioHealth currently has a variety of locations for our Surgical Technologist fellowship program. Candidates can apply if completed 3 semesters of ST school and 2 clinical rotations. Candidates will participate in the fellowship until completion of their coursework and passing their certification exam.
