JOB RESPONSIBILITIES : As part of the Parks and Recreation team, reporting directly to the Aquatics Coordinator, this position assures that the pool facility and other areas of the building and recreational swimming programs operate in a safe, effective, and efficient manner. This is a part-time role which works within the normal building operating hours. Shifts could be as early as 5:00am or as late as 10:15pm, Sunday through Saturday.

Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : For purposes of 42 USC 12101: 1. Be in a proper position when shift starts. Being ready for duty includes wearing a guard suit which is clean, neat, and in good repair; removed any unnecessary jewelry, such as earrings, bracelets, pins, studs, etc., and following policy related to personal appearance. 2. During each day of employment, swim a minimum of 300 yards. 3. Attend and participate in all in-service activities. 4. Consistently enforce facility rules and policies. 5. Maintain an alert position while in the guard chair so he/she can observe signals from guards and note anything unusual in the water area he/she is guarding. 6. Recognize and respond to emergencies as trained. Respond to emergencies in all areas of the building as part of building emergency plans when not in lifeguard rotation. 7. Make requests in a courteous and determined manner. If requests are not executed in full and at once, report the incident to the pool manager on duty. 8. Refer detailed inquiries to the pool manager on duty. 9. Clear all swimmers out of the water during emergency situations. 10. Keep the facility fit for inspection always; maintain the lifeguard equipment and first aid supplies in readiness. 11. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of pools, locker rooms, pool deck area, offices and storage. 12. Maintains licenses and certifications as required. 13. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions. 14. May assist with teaching Learn to Swim when needed. 15. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : 16. Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the Pool Manager, Aquatics Coordinator, Aquatics Manager, or Building Manager on Duty. (5%) Typical Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS : •Previous experience as a lifeguard preferred. •Experience and/or training in aquatics and/or recreational activities is desirable. LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS : •Current American Red Cross or equivalent certification in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid required. Training is available for those not yet certified. •Must be at least 15 years of age. Supplemental Information

Knowledge of : •*City, Department, and Division goals and objectives; •*City, Department, and Division policies and procedures; •*personnel rules and regulations; •Lifeguarding skills and techniques; •Basic First Aid, CPR and AEDs. •Workplace safety; •Best practices in diversity, equity and inclusion practices, strategies, systems, and policies as it relates to area of oversight; Skill in : •Proficient use of applicable technology and software; •Use of modern office equipment; Ability to : •Carry out detailed written or oral instructions; •Physically be capable of meeting the requirements of holding a red cross lifeguard certification as demonstrated during the course of work and in-service training; •Maintain focus and awareness of area of responsibility; •Interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form; •Troubleshoot problems involving several variables within familiar context; •Exercise good judgment and problem-solving skills with minimal direction or supervision; •Recognize potentially dangerous situations and work to prevent life-threatening situations to help swimmers and patrons stay safe; •Respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; •Demonstrate awareness of and an ability to effectively use communication that overcomes sociocultural and lingual barriers, to be aware of verbal and nonverbal forms of communication, and listen and adapt approach to fit audience accordingly; •Effectively use and understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; •Develop and maintain effective working relationships; •Act as a role model for inclusive and culturally competent behavior; •Resolve complaints or effectively escalate as needed; •Perform manual labor; •Travel to and gain access to work site.
