Job Summary: Histology technicians, also known as Histotechnicians, prepare tissue slides for microscopic examination by pathologists to diagnose disease. Histology technicians are responsible for cutting, staining and preparing tissue samples for the pathologist to review. They are also responsible for performing clinical laboratory procedures, examinations, and other tests pursuant to established protocols. These include maintaining equipment and records and performing quality assurance activities requiring the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Embeds, cuts, stains and performs other tasks required to process tissue in the Immunohistochemistry laboratory. Performs technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides of surgical specimens. Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity standards for the laboratory. Labels-stained slides for proper identification and diagnostic purposes Sets up and performs a variety of routine and/or complex laboratory tests and procedures relevant to the lab area and personal qualifications for analysis by a pathologist. Follows established in-process quality control procedures including recording data. Performs routine and/or preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment. Troubleshoots basic instrumentation, chemicals, reagents, stains, solutions, technical problems, and methodologies. Maintains sufficient supplies at the workstation. Ensures and maintains quality control and assurance activities. Manages chemical and biological wastes. Uses infection control practices and procedures. Performs related duties, as required.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner. Ability to analyze and solve problems and to make evaluative judgements.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, Basic Science, or related field preferred. Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) Minimum of 2-5 years’ work experience. ASPC Certified.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
This is a full-time position, based in Suffern, NY. Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, latex/non-latex gloves) as needed. Must be able to work in a laboratory environment. Stooping, turning, bending, squatting, kneeling, and the ability to lift 20 pounds.
