Core Faculty and Clinical Mental Health Counseling - Online Counselor Education
Job Description
To enrich education through diversity, TCNJ is an Equal Opportunity Employer. TCNJ has a strong commitment to inclusive excellence and is working to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice among our faculty, staff, and students. We strongly encourage a host of diverse, intersectional populations and cultures to apply including, but not limited to, identities based on race, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, and veteran status. The Online Department of Online Counselor Education at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for one of three separate 12-month, non-tenure-track Clinical Specialist positions to join our community starting in July 2025. Relocation to New Jersey is not required. The position is offered for an initial two-year appointment, with potential for renewal for a second two-year appointment and subsequent three-year appointments based on performance.
Position Summary: The successful candidate will serve as a core counselor education program faculty member who is responsible for effective online teaching, advising, and professional activity in the field of counseling (sustained memberships in counseling associations, maintenance of certifications and/or licenses in counseling, sustained professional development and service to the profession). Teaching responsibilities will include ten courses over the academic year (fall, spring and summer terms). Our program has three 15-week terms with two 7-week sessions within each. You will be granted one 7-week session where you have no teaching responsibilities. All faculty are required to have a small active clinical practice. Candidates should be committed to inclusive excellence in higher education, demonstrated through, for example, culturally responsive course design and pedagogy, equity-minded student engagement and mentorship, and cultivating intercultural competencies needed for meaningful citizenship. TCNJ has a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in our community and to supporting a healthy work-life balance for our faculty. Candidates should be strongly committed to high quality online teaching and to fostering success for all students. Clinical Specialists will be expected to join a community committed to exploration and growth in pedagogical practices. TCNJ supports its community of teacher-scholars and practitioners through a range of internal grant programs, professional travel, engaging professional development programs, and other mechanisms. These intentional efforts support the recruitment, retention, and success of our faculty, particularly those from groups traditionally underrepresented in academe.

About the Department: The Online Department of Counselor Education is a new department at The College of New Jersey, developed with external funding received for the next five years, with the expectation of the program being self-sustaining from that point forward. You will be foundational faculty growing a program that targets working with paraprofessionals in mental health HPSA communities to be able to complete their graduate education. About The College of New Jersey: Founded in 1855, TCNJ is a selective public institution that has earned national recognition for its commitment to excellence. TCNJ enrolls approximately 7,400 students, including 6,790 undergraduates and 610 graduate students, 30% of whom are self-described as members of groups traditionally underrepresented in academe. Strong curricular and co-curricular programming have helped foster a first-year to sophomore retention rate of 92%, a 4-year graduation rate of 75% (7th highest in the U.S. for public institutions), and a 6-year graduation rate of 87% (among the highest in the country). Five signature experiences are the hallmark of a TCNJ education: a personalized, collaborative, and rigorous education; undergraduate research, mentored internships, and field experiences; community engaged learning; global engagement; and leadership development. TCNJ has also received national recognition for the adoption and promotion of the teacher-scholar model for our faculty. A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation for programs offered through TCNJ’s seven academic schools—Arts and Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Nursing and Health Sciences; and Science. TCNJ has a strong Phi Beta Kappa chapter—an honor shared by less than 10 percent of colleges and universities nationally. Among other initiatives, a series of faculty/staff-based affinity groups (e.g., Minority Executive Council, Women’s Professional Network, Parent and Family Network, TCNJ PRIDE) supports a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment at TCNJ. TCNJ is located within an hour of New York City and Philadelphia. The College’s campus is set on 289 tree-lined acres in suburban Ewing Township and is known for its natural beauty. In addition to its growing racial and ethnic diversity, the region offers excellent public schools, prestigious medical centers, restaurants, art and entertainment, as well as numerous cultural and recreational activities.
