Homer, AK Full Time Work Hours: Days 1/31/2025 South Peninsula Hospital is looking for a great talent to join our diverse leadership team as the Director of Health Information Management (HIM).
HOURS: This is a Full-Time position with 80 hours a pay period (1.0 FTE). The schedule may vary to meet department needs. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The director is a working manager who supervises the Health Information Management (HIM) department. HIM Functions include paper and electronic chart assembly and analysis, release of information (ROI), file room, scanning and indexing, charge capture, coding, transcription, and data submission to various registries. The director is responsible for ensuring charts are coded in a timely fashion and will participate in coding, as needed, to meet important deadlines and cover for staff while on vacation. They will also coordinate proper coverage, chart break down, oversee data submission for State Cancer and Birth Defects Registry, communications and assistance to nursing staff. This position is non-union and exempt under the laws of the FLSA. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Education/License/Certifications: Required to have a minimum Associates degree, but a Bachelor's is preferred. Must possess current credentials through the American Health Information Management Association, preferably as an RHI.
Work Experience: Knowledge and skills to apply the principles of HIM, project management, and change management is required. Sufficient previous experience in an acute care setting HIM department (5-10 years), of which two years needs to be in a supervisory or managerial capacity. This incumbent must be able to operate a personal computer using e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheet software. Knowledge and experience of DFNB, NCCI, charge capture, chart assembly/analysis, transcription, information privacy laws, access, and release of information is essential. Ability in business math and basic statistical analysis is required for data compilation, analysis, and presentation of conclusions. The incumbent must be able to deal courteously and tactfully with patients, visitors, and physicians; explain policy and procedure to patients and their families; follow established departmental policies and procedures; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and contribute to a pleasant, positive working environment. Must have strong communication and listening skills. Must have strong organizational and decision-making skills with the ability to determine appropriate priorities. Must be able to perform work with attention to detail, be flexible in work assignments, and work competently in stressful situations. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to collaborate with others, build consensus, make sound judgments, and gain the trust and endorsement of leaders, peers, and staff.
ENVIRONMENT: South Peninsula Hospital is a 22 bed critical access hospital (CAH) with a 28 bed long term care facility and a 9 bed Emergency department that operates 24 hours per day. The hospital is located on the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The position requires a moderate amount of mobility. The ability to perform critical thinking, effective communication, and have basic manual dexterity is essential. Physical demands are moderate and may include standing or sitting for prolonged periods, walking, stooping, and occasional lifting. Emotional intelligence demands of the position are high.
